Pew Study of Media and Other Random Thoughts

This has already gotten a lot of attention on other media sites and it is officially released on Monday. The study, by the Pew Research Center along with Project for Excellence in Journalism, covers the various platforms in media: Print, Broadcast and internet. It also divides it up between views on National and local media. Editors, producers and reporters were surveyed on a variety of issues facing the industry. I haven't gotten through the whole thing yet, but it is interesting that both National and local journalists say the worsening economic situation facing journalism is the most important issue the industry faces. 52 percent say it is the most important problem, up from 35 percent the last time the study was done in 2004. Advertising wise it does point that local television is still having success because many advertisers are still unsure of internet advertising.

Decent story on KAKE about an overnight bust on minors drinking. Yeah the stories are done often, but some good video of officers working the operation, plus interviews with some of the teens involved. Not a bad story considering there wasn't any hard hitting news, until a fatal car crash earlier in the evening. KSN must really have been hurting for news, since they had very little on the fatal crash, but as several readers of this blog pointed out ripped a story from the front page of the Eagle. The Eagle story detailed a belief that a good wheat crop might lead to an increase of tornadoes or hail in a season. Yes, stations lift stories from the paper often, but this was such a unique story not heard about before the Eagle published it, so it came off bad, especially for those who read the Sunday's paper (Many must not according to the Pew study). It didn't help that "some" or "another" reporter, Aja Vickers did the story. I have never heard so many vague terms in a story referring to the authors of the study. Plus the expert used in KSN's story was junior weather guesser Andrew Kozak who had to be put in a tough spot to speak about a theory he probably had to read about from the Eagle. Instead of crediting "some" and "others," Aja might have been better to just source the Eagle or just say read Sunday's Eagle. It probably would have saved viewers a couple of minutes in their nights. Don't get me wrong. It is an interesting topic, but not done correctly by KSN last night. -Hal.

I agree KSN's story was a bad ripoff, Hal. Kozak's comments were vague though, it was probably an awkward position to be put in. At my station I don't think we even gave that story 2 seconds of thought to cover yesterday. Someone in charge should have nixed that story from the start.

Okay-- here's the problem. And the study you refer to explains it. People in the business can't (or refuse to) see the changes.

What's the most talked about story from last night? The weather story. Did the KSN reporter do a good job? Not great. But she did good enough. If you didn't read the paper (and fewer and fewer people are), then you have nothign to compare it to. Then it was decent. And you'll talk about it. At work today, whose story do you think people might talk about. Not KAKE or KWCH. Maybe KSN.

This isn't a KSN is great post. This is a pay attention to the industry and the viewers. People inside our business have tunnel vision.

With the amount of problems that KAKE has I'm surprised that they don't pull many stories from the paper. KAKE is an absolute wreck right now. Staffing problems have plagued the station for months and they're looking to cut money everywhere they can. Half of KAKE's producers even have to work 2nd jobs waiting tables just to pay their bills! I'll say that it's not very motivating to hear your news director tell everyone within earshot that he's going on a 2-week European vacation when you can't even afford to put gasoline into your car. Mark my words, you've just seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to problems at KAKE-TV. Look for several more staffers to make their exit in the coming weeks.

There is no one in charge. Management at the station does not care about the weekends.

It is not an original story. It's rip and tear journalism at best. The paper is the competition. Most of KSN's stories are paper grabs and about 12 hours old when they air.

Hal:

What is your thoughts about the (non) story that KAKE led off with on Tuesday at 6 about the prank at Central Community Church.

It did not give any hard facts. I was ticked that I watched this to find nothing except some fears and suspicions of those who were witness to the event.

Hey, who's the loser who logged on from France on Wednesday?... Which news director is on a European vacation this week?

The future is scary. If my name was "quality" I would be very afraid.

KAKE did the same story on tornadoes today

Hmmmm. As a media buyer, it wouldn't appear that anonymous two has a clue what they're talking about.

The information I have in front of me is that the Eagle and Kansas.com have 65 percent of the Wichita area's media viewership.

I wouldn't call that "fewer and fewer."

Guess where our ad dollars are going?

It looks like the Eagle has people posting on here. Nice. The Eagle is in such desperate shape that they are charging people to read things online and making them give over personal information. Nice huh.

If you believe the Eagle has 65% of this market's viewership, you are being fed a complete line of bull. And if you actually believe it, you are extremely gullible and clearly have not done your own research.

The newspaper business as a whole, nationwide, is in deep trouble. Have you looked at any newspaper group's stock over the last 10 or so years?

Now, i'm not saying that electronic media such as radio and TV don't have their own problems, because they do. But I'd much rather be in our position than the Eagle's.

Here's a recent article I just found: http://www.forbes.com/2007/09/14/newspapers-media-advertising-biz-media_cx_lh_0914papers.html

Anyone else find it interesting how KAKE reported an arrest in the officer shooting Tuesday and then had to retract it several minutes later. Looks like shabby journalism and I'd say I'm shocked but then again it is KAKE.

Anyone else think KAKE's story on the firing of a Wichita schools employee was shaky as best and nothing more than rumor? Anyone have any details. I didn't see a follow up today. Anyone know why?

Hal - I know you have commented before about the web offerings by the stations and how things are definitely moving in that direction. On that note, have you seen KSN's webcast they do during the day? Its usually taken down by the evening. Mased on your comments of content on the stations through the history of your blog, I'd be curious how you digest KSN's daily webcast.

Didn't see a follow-up to the KAKE story because I think the little facts in the story were blown out of proportion. I am sure KAKE was embarassed today. It's sad to see that all 3 stations have certifiable "Trainwrecks" reporting for them. I will say, and this isn't saying much, KWCH's trainwreck, Linda, comes off better than KAKE's Abby and most defnitely KSN's Aja. Although KAKE's trainwreck on Wednesday might have appeared only as a slight "derailment" on air, not knowing the real story. However, it was a trainwreck with the school district not too pleased late Wednesday and Thursday. I am curious if KAKE did anything behind the scenes to correct the problem they helped create by hiring such "wrecks." Sadly the economic pressures by station owners create a breeding ground for such wrecks in medium sized markets, which at one time were immune to them.

Here's the thing...it wasn't a story. It seemed to me KAKE was reporting on speculation and rumors. They got away from that for awhile but now it looks like it's back.

They've had two big f-ups in the past week with stories. Three if you add reporting the officer who was shot at's name and putting his life in danger again. Police asked media not to and everyone else, the Eagle included, respected that and said they knew his name but weren't releasing it out of consideration for him and his family.

KAKE had to retract another story on Thursday night.

we know there are trainwreck reporters in this market. Thank shrinking budgets for that! Does anyone think there are trainwreck weather people or sports? Probably not given this market, but I think I can probably name some............

LOL... It was KSN who reported the officer's name all day, not KAKE. KAKE reported the name once on our midday show Wednesday after having it released to us BY GORDON. Then came the email asking the media not to report it. We never said the name again and explained in our later stories that we knew the identity, but were not reporting it due to the police department asking us not to.

KSN first reported the officers name on the 6pm news on Tuesday. KAKE did so on their 6pm news, once they saw it on KSN.
It was on Wednesday that KAKE back pedaled and took the name out of their news. Once something is out there, there is no taking it back.

Does anyone know details about the firing of the marketing director at KWCH? Their Feb. rating book was bad (4th book in a row), but he shouldn't take all the blame.

Hal, are you slacking?! where have you been? some great stories in the last week or so. Not to mention final 4 possibilities and sports coverage!!!!!

No doubt a lot has happened this week and based on some of the comments I would love to know more about what went on with this whole issue regarding broadcasting and posting on the web the name of the police officer, only to then have at least one station pull it according to some confusing comments. I'll compose some thoughts and weigh in on this and thoughts about coverager of the other big stories this weekend. -Hal

KSN found out the name of the officer shot through sources and not through an official release or announcement. It appears as KAKE heard this on KSN and then went with it. KWCH, it would appear didn't have the name but made sure they let folks know they were not broadcasting the name due to police wishes. KAKE, after the Police department pleaded with them, pulled the name off of their site and withheld it in following stories. KSN, meanwhile continued with running the name, upsetting the Police. It would be interesting to know if the relations between KSN and the Police Department are headed to where they were following the whole Bob Donley name calling incident of the Chief a few years ago.

Please do. I'm sure you'll be one ided... and the KWCH cheerleader will be here to validate his ego.

Press on, old chap.

Why should he post... he is getting what he wanted when he set this blog up. You think he really cares about media issues in Wichita? No, he wants to see the stations fight because he is a failed journalist with no life.
