The Tiller Death
Obviously the biggest story since the arrest of BTK happened, as longtime abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was fatally shot Today at his church. Not sure as to who exactly broke the news first. A commenter said KAKE broke it first. When I was watching both KAKE and KSN were on while KWCH had a crawl. I must say KSN's coverage early was good. I really like new KSN anchor John Snyder. He does a nice job in breaking news filling time, because it seems natural. It is clear he has some National experience doing it. Stephanie does a nice job with John on the set. I liked KSN's content especially at 5PM for such a quick turn. KAKE did OK, but Abby Barnett is not solid in live breaking news situations. By 10PM, the shows were all pretty even with the same information. It will be interesting to see how the stations handle this story in the days to come. -Hal

Yeah, if you ignore that small Greensburg thing.
This story is bigger nationally than Greensburg and it has ramifications nationally on one of the most hot button issues of our generation.
Although you raise an interesting point: the Greensburg story was a DEVASTATING local impact story --very possibly bigger than Tiller in KANSAS--with no national consequences. The Tiller Story is a mega local story with a potentially large national impact.
In the same way that Brown v Board of Education had historical national consequences, it probably didn't "feel" bigger than the most devastating Tornado of that time locally. No one on the East or West Coasts could tell you a thing about a Tornado that killed 20 or 30 people in Kansas a half century later, but anyone who picks up a history book on either coast now knows Brown V Board of Education.
Thats the kind of story this COULD be relative to Greeensburg. The Tiller shooting could be a footnote in history books.

Anon 9:47: Give Hal a break. He's awfully busy trying to organize and line up parking spaces in front of the courthouse and forgot about the Greensburg tornado. ;-)
Oh, to be a fly on the wall at KWCH. Not only did they get their tails kicked on the Tiller coverage, Queen Joan lays off five people, reduces three more to part time and mandates five-days of unpaid leave for all staff.
Expect more.
I know this isn't your beat, but I'm pretty sure the Eagle broke the story.
Sorry Hal, can't agree on KSN. Snyder is alright--but to me, Stephanie Bergmann just doesn't look right or feel right in the main anchor chair.
I would agree with Anon 8:08. Stephanie doesn't seem like the right person for that position. I do however, really like John in the chair. He seems natural a even though he has only been here for around a month, seemed very knowledgeable about what was going on with the Tiller shooting. John right now is the only one I like at KSN.
From a look outside of the media in Wichita, KAKE was the only station that had anything on a shooting in east Wichita period. Cerullo was on live giving updates way before the other two stations did anything. Soon after, KSN was on with cut ins with the anchors, followed later by KWCH. I looked continuously for something from the Eagle about the on-going situation, but nothing was posted. Hats off to KAKE for being ahead of the game during this instance.
Tiller death is not bigger than the Greensburg story. The networks, the president, the discovery channel all came to town for Greensburg.
Tiller is a big national story, but not bigger than an entire town being eliminated.
Thanks Anonymous 7:47. I couldn't have said it better myself.
Finally, someone who isn't a complete moron.
Where is Hal? It would be great to have a couple of new topics on here.
