A HEAP of Radar Gun Stories

I'm baaaaaaaaaack, to a degree. I had a nice Summer break. Lets start with my first post back with one of my favorite, or not so favorite reporters in town.
For children, the start of the school year comes with it the unpleasant realities of early bedtimes and homework. However, for adults watching TV news in Wichita comes the reality one station will air useless stories of an obnoxious reporter with a radar gun showing people going fast in school zones. Don’t get me wrong, I think many people ignore school zones, go too fast and its an accident waiting to happen, however the obnoxious ways of Brian Heap do not make the stories easy to watch. Also, it was interesting the first time, maybe even the second time, but now they are old and have become the same thing each time with him pointing a radar gun at speeding cars, although the story this past week had him wearing a raincoat and catching a police car going too fast. - Hal

It is all presentation and no substance.

Kind of like the dumpster diving story he did. There is no original reporting in anything he does.

A SMART investigative reporter would request the moving violation tickets database of the WPD for several years. What percentage of MV tickets are written in school zones? Why is it so low? Don't WPD traffic cops think our kids are worth protecting? Now, THAT would inform taxpayers, parents, viewers and hold the WPD accountable. You could also cross reference that MV database with mapping software to find out whether kids in certain neighborhoods get more protection than others. KSN... show 'em how it's done. Show 'em who has brains.

Hal,

Have you seen the new Spangles commercial featuring former KSN Anchor Anita Cochran. I thought it was terrible acting on Anita's part, but then again she was a terrible anchor. What are your thoughts?

Too bad KWCH did that exact angle the last time the series ran. How's it feel to be wrong and a hack?

KSN can't do it. They are bankrupt or didn't you hear. They can't afford mapping software. Heard they can barely afford to keep gas in their vehicles.

4:14 Your comment doesn't deal with the fact that KWCH does "investigative" promotion, but little work of investigative substance. There are some folks at KSN who know what to do. That needs to be encouraged instead of accepting the pablum KWCH serves up.

which station in town had furloughs that actually affected the paychecks of its employees? ksn?

no. kwch.

congrats ksn for becoming #2 in the market...you'll be number one soon if kwch doesnt step up their game.

Too bad KWCH had triple the employees of all the other stations and still at least double the others.

KWCH's ratings went up more in the last book. All KSN's numbers came from KAKE. They are the ones in trouble here.

And arrogance comes before a fall. Check overall viewership numbers. Down, down, down. None of the four males 18-28 in my household are watching. ESPN? Yup. The web? yup. Local TV news? Only in a blizzard.

I just find it super interesting how much KSN's ratings have shot up since Anita's departure...I wonder if Spangles stock will see a downturn now...

I won't watch the local news any more. Since it is never anything new, I have started getting my local news from KSN & KAKE'S iPhone apps and also from all the local news sources Twitter accounts. It gives me an extra 30 minutes in my day.

I did however turn on KWCH the other night. It looks like they are spending their money on keeping their reporters extremely well fed in the break room.

Then your house is full of ignorant people who only really care about sports. Says more about you than us.

So with talk of the ratings growth at KSN, anyone have info on what the new anchor pairings have done for their ratings? Percent increases...share increases...whatever you can provide. I'm curious to see what kind of 'Post-Cochran bump' they got. I'll say this...their on-air product is noticeably better.

Where is Alana Rocha? Haven't seen her reports lately.

KSN's jump likely has more to do with the DTV switch and people still not able to get KAKE than on their own accord.

How is Hal going to blog about Channel 31?

Alana Rocha has left KWCH. Does anyone know why? Hopefully, she'll pursue a career as a foreign correspondent, what she intended in college. She was one of 12's best.

Anyone in the know willing to say if KSN starting HD news Monday for the new season, or waiting until November? Found sample KSN News HD news opens online here...http://www.stvp.net/main.html
Click on "The work" or the demo reel. There are stills of the opens there, and full video with VO on his personal website. It looks like they were done as part of school studies, but with the accomplished resume of his production company, I was wondering if this is this a glimpse of KSN going HD? If so, it's a good looking product.

Who is going to be the first to spill the beans from the big KAKE meeting on Thursday night? Anyone?

I'm in the know at KSN. That was a student project. No HD plans for now.

Alana's contract was up and the company didn't renew, which is interesting considering they're starting their new Univision project and Alana is of Spanish decent and is very fluent. A loss on KWCH's part.

What's the scuttlebutt at KAKE?

The disaster that was Anya Sehgal has finally left KWCH.. Any word on if she was fired? Or left on her own with good terms? And will KWCH even hire a replacement?

Alan Shope is gone. He is no longer on the KAKE website.

While I hate to see anyone with credibility lose their job, I will say I won't miss Shope. The orange skinned fake tan always made me cringe when he came on. Compared to Bruce & Jim he did not have the talent or personality they have. Also glad to hear Anya is gone.

But I'm not glad to hear Alana is gone. I am glad though that 12 did welcome her back after her wreck. It probably really helped her get back to living a normal life again.

Alana was in a wreck?
