KWCH Promos For Roeder Trial Access

A Judge banned the media on Jan. 11 from portions of jury selection at the Scott Roeder trial. Roeder is accused of killing abortion doctor George Tiller. A day later the Kansas Supreme Court reversed the Judge's ruling after KWCH, The Wichita Eagle, The Kansas City Star, and the Associated Press petitioned the High Court to reverse the District Judge's ruling. A day later the Judge agreed to open jury selection to those media outlets who petitioned. I think that was the fair and right thing to do. However, in the days that followed, KWCH promoted the fact they were the only Wichita station allowed in the courtroom. The promos bothered me slightly, however I did think that since they were part of the filing to the Supreme Court they ought to get something out of it. The KWCH promo department, it seems, wanted to have more fun than they already were having. In a promo that ran on Tuesday phrases like, "One station stepped in," and "Take a stand for your rights," were used. Give me a break. I bet if it wasn't for the print publications and the AP getting things rolling, KWCH wouldn't have even gotten involved. The promos are over doing something that once the trial starts and testimony gets going, most viewers wont even remember that KWCH was the only TV station present for jury selection. -Hal

Hey, when something seperates you from the other stations in town--I say run with it. Where were KAKE and KSN?

They probably realized this was just JURY SELECTION and not the main event and didn't feel the need to either fight to be included OR crow about being the only station to do so!

KAKE and KSN never take a stand on issues like this. They let KWCH or the Eagle take the lead, file the paperwork and use their resources while eventually getting the benefit.

Just jury selection? Ya..just in the biggest trial since Rader.

Also, KAKE and KSN still have such large internal problems, they likely couldn't divert the resources anyway.

The promos should have said: "The only station present to give you info on something nobody cares about". Jury selection is boring. Watching paint dry is like watching the Super Bowl in comparison.

KWCH has the Super Bowl too.

Etheredge is almost over! Another boring trial to further bore viewers.
Next it's on to the trial of Israel Mireles, the guy who ALLEGEDLY killed Emily Sander.
Will viewers sit through all the gory details, likely not!

So do you suggest local news ignore some of the more important trials in this area and instead run some fluff that isn't real news?

Amen, Feb. 5 3:47 poster. Why can't we find other stories outside the courtroom? Let viewers know if something big happens (like he admits to it and begs for death). Otherwise, NO ONE CARES. Producers, think about it: if this happend in Gove county, how would you cover it? Okay, now build your rundown.

The fact that you put allegedly in caps shows your ignorance. The guy fled to Mexico after the murder. Jee why would an innocent person do that? They wouldn't.

As for your comments about Etheredge. Hundreds of local investors lost thousands of dollars in this fraud. Dozens of vendors lost money. A giant tract of land sits empty right off the interstate as a giant eyesore. It's a huge story and to not cover it would be doing a dis-service.

Hey 2/5 11:51 poster, AKA brainchild. I said ALLEGEDLY because it is obvious he killed her, but yet local news will still blow it out, even though everyone knows what the outcome will be.
