A critical look at the Wichita TV news

"In the Zone" = "Heap" of Nonsense
KWCH has a segment they apparently do on Sundays called, "In the Zone." (I hope I got the title right, maybe its "Answer Back 12?") "In the Zone" is a segment where they send new morning anchor Brian Heap out to the streets with a radar gun and he sees how fast drivers go in school speed zones. Let me get this out of the way first: people need to slow down and it appears it is an issue. However, when someone is as obnoxious as him and apparently is making this into a weekly segment, then you have to make note of it. My problem is it looks like a segment all about the reporter with him prancing back and forth and even saying once, "She never hit the breaks until she saw me." Thank God for him. I guess I will fall for the Sweeps ploy or whatever you call it, and watch each week to laugh at the Heap. He goes over the top and to me appears as a Heap of nonsense, but hopefully he will save a few lives. -Hal

Hal, what station do you think has the best weekend news? Watching tonight it seems like almost all of them have such limited resources, it's a joke.
Hal the Hack strikes again. Someone who has never worked in this business lecturing people who do. Someone who has no experience telling people how to do their jobs. Did you ever think that speeding through school zones is a major issue? How about the fact that several people have been hit in them in the past 2 years because of people speeding and not paying attention. How about the fact that maybe these people will slow down now. How about the fact that this sheds light on a big problem.
No those thoughts never crossed your mind. You just wanted to use your ha, ha Heap of "whatever" line in a story and boom there you go.
Do you ever go after KAKE truely useless health and cosmetic stories they do every sweeps period that help no one. No. Do you go after KSN's pointless, incoherent piece. Uh,uh. You just bash 12 time in and time out.
You are the hack here Hal.
Hal you need to tell everyone what your qualifications are to judge this business or this market? The fact is, chances are you don't have any.
Yeah I gotta agree... everyone knows people speed through school zones a lot of the time. That is something the police needs to enforce, not the new KWCH morning anchor who frankly looked obnoxious out there. I can see maybe a one time thing to raise awareness, but a weekly series? *rolleyes*

You must work at Ch 12.
Why do I make this observation?
Because Hal is being critical of your ivory tower.
If he throw someone or something under the bus that's a part of Ch 10 or 3, you and your 12 cronies jump in and pile on... Agreeing with the person you now accuse of being a hack.
But heaven forbid 12 gets called out for something -- then you get defensive.
You can't have it both ways.
By the way, this "series" is very 1989. Are you swabbing doorknobs and testing public toilets for germs next? Except more drivel? I do.
Now watch for a POP about how CH 12 took to the streets and forced drivers to slow down.
Sheesh.
As for Hal, regardless of his qualifications, I think he simply means to rile us up and then giggle while we all take the bait.
Best thing we can do is ignore this, and him.
You guys miss the point. KWCH keeps me safe from 25 MPH speeders, KAKE keeps me wrinkle free as I get older, and KSN keeps me from falling asleep with Anita and Dave's screaming.
Its all good. And its all super sized in sweeps month!
Hal you don't need to prove anything. Who are these people to write that? If they don't like what you have to say, then they don't have to keep coming to your blog. This is what free speech is about, being able to express your feelings and opinions.
I for one enjoy your insight into our local news and the people on it. If the people didn't want to be criticized then they should have picked another profession.
It's safe to say all 3 major news station here in Wichita do a decent job. It's funny to see some of these people complaining about what you say, yet they'll have no problem bashing the other guys across the street.
Everyone needs to calm down, grab a beer, relax and realize life is too short and full of MANY non-tv news related greatness. Keep on truckin' Hal!
Maybe embarrassing people into slowing down will help...did you ever think about that. Plus, it got people talking and that's the point of a sweeps story.
You know, in this era of shrinking audiences and viewership... maybe we should all thank Hal for watching. At least he's one viewer who watches all the shows, adds to our ratings, and keeps those precious ad dollars rolling in.
And while I don't like all his opinions, I can't tell him what to say. I can, however, navigate away from this page. And the less hits he gets, perhaps he may change things. You know, like how your ND and GM revamp everything every time your show goes up or down a few points.
Anon 3:24... Expect More DRIVEL. LOL, and so true. 12 says it's returning to beat reporting and hard news, but its sweeps pieces so far don't indicate viewers can expect anything other than STUNT TV. Is the promotion department there still deciding what sweeps pieces to do? The reason I'm tough on 12? They used to do news. If they market themselves as setting the bar higher, I EXPECT that. When I don't get it, I feel cheated. Guess I'll have to stick to the net for in-depth news.
The promo department NEVER decided what pieces to do. I think I know who who are 12:28. You recently left 12 and not of your own choosing and now you are as bitter as ever.
Is 12 really doing dumpster diving? I guess you can "Expect Every Cliche in the Book." Right down to that cheesy promo of familiar 12 faces posed to look like something they're not.
Other than those who work at KWCH I don't know how you couldn't watch "The Heap" on KWCH and not think that they are trying an approach similar to KAKE's several years ago when they had a reporter named, "Jeff Golimowski." Heap and Golimowski certainly have similar styles that are all for shock and talk early on (such as this) but really wear one viewers in the long run. Why KWCH needs to go this route, already being #1 is confusing.
OK... New topic. I think enough's been said about 12. I don't work there, but the fact is they're a strong station doing a lot of things right, and while I don't like their latest content either, let's keep it in perspective. I'd love to keep sticking it to that one KWCHer who drives everyone nuts on here, but some professional courtesy is probably in order. We'll all have the election to gripe about in a few hours.
I’m bothered by the continued attacks and pressure on Hal to reveal more about his employment and/or his qualifications to host this Wichita TV blog. He introduces questions and topics of concern in today’s media-driven world. Unless he has an inherent bias tied to being currently employed or has been employed at one of the local TV stations, why should he need to reveal any more about himself? Any observant viewer is probably just as qualified to comment on the local TV newscasts as people who work in those newsrooms. Working in news does not “super qualify” your observations. In fact, it may enhance an innate, media-centric arrogance that shows up far too often on this board. Viewers are often far better judges of fairness, balance and quality content (or the lack of it) than some people who work in newsrooms might acknowledge.
I agree with Anon 9:50. I'd like to know who Hal is just as much as the rest of you. We're journalists... we have a NEED to know. And none of you seem to want to identify yourselves! But honestly, does it make any difference if he's just a viewer who started a blog or some on-the-beach news jockey. Either way... his or her observations prompt some lively discussion.
As a former assistant news director, producer, and educator I'm concerned about the future of broadcasting... especially local news. I'd love to see some of you gifted, creative people begin to dialogue about how we can breathe some life into this dinosaur!
More jealousy from people with hash-marks for ratings when KSAS beats KSN every book in news.
