Sweeps Woody

I write this a couple of times of year, but here it goes again. Its time for all the scary music and goofy stories. Its time for the ole ratings time known as Sweeps. I am not sure when it begins this time around. May's usually begins then or a few days before, but I hear it may be a little sooner, according to an LA paper. Have fun and enjoy the stories, whenever it begins. We'll tell by the promos and gimmicks which make it Sweeps.

I was sadened to hear that KAKE's Dave Phillips is leaving (right in the middle of sweeps mind you) last night. I believe his last night on "Overtime Live" is May 11th. I can't say that I am an avid viewer of that show but with just Ben Arnet, Jason Duda and God knows who else, I think that KAKE's "Lawyer on the Line" will be more entertaining then listening to those three.

The ratings period begins this Thursday, April 24.

OTL is a bust. It's not watchable. It's like PTI plus Around the Horn and a little bit of American Idol all rolled into one.

If you want actual sports analyst the way it should be, my fav is Sports Sunday. It's a little more in depth and not for your casual, Friday come lately sports fan but that's why it's been around for more than a decade now and pounding KAKE in the ratings.

Where is KWCH Linda Mares??

Oh Boy. Anon 940's comments will open up the floodgates with I am sure plenty of KWCHers. I should probably just open up a new post for these comments which I am sure will follow. -Hal

OTL is a little nuts, but even if KWCH's Sports Sunday is #1 doesn't necessarily make it the greatest in TV. It might be better than OTL, but that isn't saying much. It would be nice to get a mix between the over-the-top testosterone of OTL and the snoozefest of Sports Sunday.

Linda left the station (on her own accord) to do other things.

yeah, and Sports Sunday not only completely ripped off the final segment of ESPN's "The Sports Reporters", they didn't even bother to re-name it.

OTL used to be watchable when James Sido was on it. Ben Arnet is a waste of flesh.

Ya, because engaging interviews and actual analysis are boring. We want Hooters girls, screaming sirens and graphics that give you a headache.

Sports Sunday has been around for as long as ESPN's offering but you keep believing that they stole anything. The term Parting Shots has been used on sports programs and articles for decades.

It looks like KAKE's blood-letting has begun. I wonder who else they'll cut to try and plug up the holes in their sinking ship.

Nice to see the KWCH promotions department is posting on the blog again. LOSERS!

ANON April 23, 2008 9:43 PM -

What a horrible thing to say about someone. If you've ever met Ben, there's no way you would ever make that statement. Therefore I'm guessing you're a bitter old timer at KWCH (much like your audience) who enjoys being put to sleep by watching the three crotch shots on Snooze Sunday. Now go drink some Metamucil and change your Depends.

Thsnks for the update on Linda Mares. She is very nice gal!

Hey ANON 9:40 PM - your Fact Finder team needs to actually research the Nielsen numbers instead of drinking the KWCH KoolAid. KAKE's Overtime Live beat Sports Sunday in the February 2007 metro ratings.

I got news for ya BOTH programs suck.

Sports Sunday starring the ever-so-arrogant Bruce Haertl:

Informative?..... my big toe.... it is just Bruce talking about his favorite subject which is himself.

I also love how it is called Sports Sunday but they tape it during the week sometime (Which explains the lack of "live" anything). It is the same old boring crap week after week just like everything else on KWCH. Hell they don't even have a set they are just sitting on the interview set with a crappy graphic rolling in the screen behind them.

Let's do what we have done for the last twenty years and never change it cause we are number one and don't think we need to do anything new ever.

The Pro-KWCH gang can spout of whatever rhetoric they want to BUT I see the ratings book too and what I see is the gap between them and the other stations closing little by little.

So go ahead and sit in your office on mahogany row and brag about your ratings because that is exactly what the other stations did years ago and that is how you became number one. It is only a matter of time before history repeats itself and it happens to you.

And one more thing Mr KWCH were you there when they became number one????? I am willing to bet you were not so all you ae doing is riding the coat tails of the people who came before you and actually had talent and could think out-of-the-box.

KAKE and Overtime Live:

OTL was great when it started and Sido was still on I agree with that comment one hundred percent. While I do not have the flaming hatred for Ben Arnet like I do Bruce Haertl I still find Ben annoying as hell. Sido was funny and entertaining Ben is just a know-it-all geek who somehow landed a job with the cool kids.

The set that OTL is shot on is a joke, BUT at least they have a set so they have one over KWCH there.

The show itself is a heavy metal nightmare though. Those red graphics and the "I am stuck in hell" soundtrack are a little over the top. I am amazed that got by KAKE management.

The call in segment is a joke they take 3 calls and two of them are the same two guys that call in every week.

Ben tries to be funny and they try to write clever little skits but they always seem to fall flat on their face.

Both OTL and Sports Sunday are a waste of Wichita airtime......but then again what isn't. I will say at least KAKE has the balls to try something different and go out on a limb and while I may think it sucks,a lot of people talk about it.

I have never heard anyone say ANYTHING about Sports Sunday, but on more than one occassion I have overheard people conversing about something they saw on OTL.....now I can't say they LIKED what they saw BUT it did grab their attention. In a world of cookie cutter TV it is a little refreshing to see KAKE is at least trying a different shape of cookie cutter.

And no Mr KWCH I am not bitter and recently passed up for a promotion.

Anyone at KAKE know if Phillips leaving is a financial issue?

Anonymous said...

OTL was never about the money for Dave. He has a regular full time job outside of TV. Simply put, Dave is a sports fan and this was a fun opportunity but it required him to be in studio every Sunday night at 10:30. Now he gets to go out on top since his beloved Jayhawks finally won a national championship and the show is #1 in Wichita.

Oh the KAKErs are at it again. You rascals. Don't you have to go mop your own floors because Gray can't afford to pay for a cleaning crew anymore?

We've been over the numbers that show KWCH has more viewers than KAKE and KSN combined. Numbers released by Nielsen mind you and not spun. We've talked about how their 9pm KSAS Newscast gets more eyeballs than KSN's 10 so I won't rehash it AGAIn.

BTW: Sports Sunday is done on Sunday not in the week you dope.

No Phillips made the decision on his own...financial are you kiddin me they pay him like 50 bucks a show! He is retiring from TV altogether is what we were told.

Anonymous said...

Yeah they TAPE it on Sunday! When I was there it was taped during the week cause Bruce refused to come in on a weekend and upset his precious schedule.

I agree with Anonymous 1008...

Both stink... instead, lets put more re-runs of Andy Griffith with a different theme song on!!!!!
