KSN: A Houston TV Station?? and "Searching for..." on KAKE

If you didn't know better you would have thought KSN was the NBC affiliate in Houston on Wednesday. Based solely on Dave, you would have thought this tropical storm (NOT a hurricane) was baring down on his town and not Houston for the time he spent on it. Previous comments have discussed KSN now leading off with weather and that being a bad thing on a slow day. It now seems Dave will treat any weather event as if it is a coming down on his own town. I think, I have no choice, but to now issue for KSN a permanent, Severe Weather Woody. No matter a sunny day in Wichita, or a passing storm in Uganda, don't be shocked to see KSN treating it as if a tornado or blizzard was blowing through Wichita.
Also KAKE must have turned its scanners on again on Wednesday after missing breaking news the other day. They led off with a chase that injured a Deputy. It was the end of the cast that proved humorous when they go to show the suspect involved and suddenly a black screen with a corner graphic of the Chiefs pops up. Susan Peters talks about authorities, "searching for. . . . . . . not the chiefs." It can happen anytime to anyone in TV, especially in breaking situations and that one was funny. -Hal

KWCH seems to be the only one following the casino developments in Sumner County involving the casino down there.

Everyone else I think gave up on it after the Wichita vote went down. They broke another story involving Bob Knight and his plans again today.

Yep. Weather weather. That's what a consultant will do to you :(

Consultants think weather is always the answer.

No one in this market goes to KSN for weather. They never have and they never will. 12 and 10 have a reputation for their weather departments that 3 is well number 3.

3 was the leader in weather in 1998... but since Freeman's act got old and Merril got the KFDI news and spotting team and other spotters, and KAKE got more aggressive and brought in Prater, KSN has the #3 weather department, mostly at fault of its own Chief meteorologist...

I think the other meteorologists at 3 are fine, and Dave himself certainly knows enough and has enough experience to be the Chief. The problem lies in his "scare tactic" delivery during severe weather, and "baby talk" delivery during nice weather.

Jeanene Kiesling went to Kansas City and Cara Kumari went to Nashville. As a commenter pointed out, thats why former KFDIer Jared Cerullo made an appearence doing a Crimestoppers on Tuesday. What are my feelings on this. I think I will take this up at a later time. It really says a lot of where I think the future of this business lies. Although I am not a fan of the KAKE style, if you are an up and coming reporter, it is a faster track to bigger markets. The question is can reporters like this stay at these stations, or do the high pressured breaking news (and not good stories you'll remember months later) every minute of the day drive them out. -Hal

I found KAKE interrupting a soldier's funeral, putting a camera in the face of a grieving mother shameful. Even for a station that would step over a woman dying at a gas station to get a story this was over the line.

The family may have let you say but you were not invited.

If you are talking about Cara and Jeanene... then it's not really a question at all.

The answer is yes.

More people have gone from KWCH to bigger markets than KAKE. I don't think anyone from KAKE ever went to network but KWCH has produced a number of them, the late David Bloom, being the most recognizable.

KAKE is tabloid journalism and their actions at the soldier's funeral today prove it.

That is strange comment.

High pressured breaking news is what these reporters live for. Stories that won't be remembered??? BTK and Greensburg were huge national stories.

What? They got more money in a larger market, because they wanted to move up, and had the skills to do it.

It had nothing to do with being "driven out".

Do people really have blue lights in their homes or did KAKE fake it to set a mood?

also, I don't believe it has anything to do with what station you were at. A KSNer has an equal chance of becoming network one day as a KWCHer. It depends on the person.

Hi -- long time reader, first time blogger here.

Regarding the soldier funeral: KAKE was invited. The station previously interviewed the family last week after learning of David Lane's death. Arrangments to be at his service and to speak with his friends and mother were made in advance.

I think it's fair to say all reporters in this market strive to be respectful and mindful of others during times of grief, regardless of their station's reputation. These types of reports should honor the fallen. Anybody who has ever covered a funeral will tell you it can be a delicate balancing act; get the story, but tread lightly.

Furthermore, rarely is the funeral itself the story. It's not about an event. It's about a person. Sadly, sometimes you have to be at one to learn more about the other.

Honestly, I didn't see anything terribly wrong with the report. As Lane's mother said -- her son wanted to be remembered, and she wanted to tell his story. I would hope they are pleased with what aired.

Okay, I'm off my soap box now. Back to the news grind! :)

Long time reader- I watched the story and I tend to agree with you about the soldier funeral story on KAKE. I watched the 5PM version by Chris Sadeghi. I assume this is the story past people have commented about. If you haven't seen it yet, you have to watch it by clicking on the video link showing the entire Thursday 5PM show. The video story isn't posted by itself.
I do not think media should go to funerals and know if media ever wanted to go to one of my relatives, I would tell my family, don't let them in. In this case if the family allowed them in I guess its OK, but I really don't like funeral stories. I think the commenter had it right when it said the focus of the story isn't on the funeral, but on the person. To the cynical that may seem like a PC thing to say. For KAKE I thought this story was done respectful and unexpected (compared to many of the other stories on their station), but I am curious as to where all the criticism for the story came from. Is it the way this story was told or is it that this is just one example of a subject matter you don't prefer? I tend to agree with that line of thinking and think that relatives should be able to grieve without cameras present, but as long as the station doesn't barge in unannounced or univited, I guess its up to the family. I might open this up to a separate post later in the weekend. -Hal
