A Fatal Fire or a Dog Caper: What Leads?

Friday's 6PM newscasts left me head scratching over KWCH's lead. Why did they lead with the Doggie Caper instead of the fatal fire which took the life of a father and son? I know the fatal fire happened the night before and probably lead every newscast up until this point of the day, but the 6PM newscast would be the first one of the day to catch most people after they come home from the day's activities. However, it was a good decision for KWCH and KAKE to not lead with the fire by 10PM, because most people probably had heard by then and it was time to move on. KAKE was smart to find a spot for the solved caper in the 2nd segment at 6. Don't get me wrong, the "Doggie Caper" deserves mention, but the 2nd segment is the place for it, even on a slow news day, yet alone on a day where a 4 year-old and his dad lose their lives in a fire, plus the fact there was a homicide. All the stations treated the doggie caper as a big story from the start. Sure, its not everyday a woman shoplifts a Yorkie terrier by putting it in her bag and leaving the store, however a story like this has its place buried in a newscast.
Utensils, number of newscasts and tampons - Wow, this post is short, but I had to do it just to hopefully move on from the comments from the last post. Things definitely got a little nuts, and I guess I need to reject even more comments then I do now. Have a fine weekend. -Hal

Boycott WIBW!

For years on end, WIBW had no problems letting KCTV 5 in Kansas City not be blacked out in Manhattan and Junction City. Recently this has changed and I urge everyone not to give into WIBW's ridiculous greedy demands. WIBW as you know is trying to charge Cox for carrying its signal, yet alot of smaller cable providers across Kansas are being left out of this arrangement and can continue airing other CBS stations programming without the programming being blacked out.

WIBW should be proud of the fact that Cox carried its signal, which was never interrupted by Cox advertising and gave thousands of households a clear signal which let WIBW and its advertisers air its signal on a paid service for free. Why would you now ask for money?

The simple reason for this is because money in local television is starting to dry up. All the major networks have programming now on their websites, which as a result is making the programming less valuable on their airwaves. Also, Gray communications (WIBW's owners) is having known financial difficulties with debt, and is exploring ways to pay this off. They are using WIBW as an experiment because its the dominant local station with the 2 local teams in the NCAA tournament on CBS to use as leverage. If this does work, they will eventually use it on the other properties, If not, It will just hurt the small Topeka but dominant station in Topeka, hurting them a little. But not the bottom line for long as they would give in, and it would not affect the other gray properties.

In other words, this is all about greed, and hurting the consumer, and I would suggest to do everything possible to send the message to WIBW loud and clear that this is not acceptable.

Keep this in mind because if this is successful for WIBW, every other station will soon follow.

Hal:

I love how the comments anymore hardly have anything to do with what you talk about.

Well heck I might as well join in...

What on earth was with the weather coverage tonight on KAKE? They did not mention that the wind yesterday was so strong it picked little Deb Farris off the ground and yada yada. :)

By the way does anyone else think Deb has gotten better looking as she has matured and had kids? Lets start a discussion about that!

Hal, The WIBW rant of mine relates to them charging the cable company for their signal and could be a scary sign for the future of all local stations charging cable companies to carry a free over the air signal.

Here are a few links:

This is a legit story and Gray owns WIBW which is doing this, and may do something like this with KAKE if successful up in Topeka.
