Football Frenzy, Fever.... whatever you call it

Tonight marks the first Friday of the Stations' high school football efforts. We will see the coverage at 10PM and had a sneak peak last night then the previews at 6 Tonight. I must say the Tailgate party KSN had tonight and I guess is having every week is an interesting idea. I don't know for sure but I think they did it last year as well. It would be better if Jim Kobbe had a better partner to chat with than Dave Freeman. Dave in these environments really shows his Achilles. Watching Leon at the Fair Tonight at Five, shows Leon would be much more comfortable to watch during the tailgates and better at interaction with Jim, rather than Dave. I don't think I mentioned it last year, but it seems as if the 3 stations all have different types of coverage. I cannot remember who does what, but one I think shows more in-depth highlites from games, while another is more about quanity then quality. I'll watch tonight and hopefully figure out who does what philosophy, if they repeat what they did last year. Interested in your thoughts about the football coverage from 10PM. -Hal

Alan Shope was a caricature of a caricature of a sportcaster.

KSN bypasses breaking news about the Boeing strike to do a shameless plug for high school football. Let's see a game or people's jobs, the economy, all that stuff. They really have given up on real news over there haven't they. I guess some people like counter-programming. Not.

KWCH has it's revamped program on 12, a full 30 minutes on KSCW and actual games from western Kansas. I think it's very, very easy to see who wins here. Not to mention they have their own site dedicated to high school sports.

Anon 946, Don't overlook the fact KSN beat the others with the Boeing Strike news at 530 by at least couple of minutes, then the battle of the crawls was on.

Oh that's right... 12 can do no wrong...

They are perfect. They are TV utopia.

I forgot.

Thanks for reminding me! My life is complete.

You, however, are still a troll.

All 3 stations have "actual"games from western kansas.

KWCH cut the first part of Letterman off by 5 minutes. I was mad about that.

KSN has a weather first format that doesn't serve them in times of breaking news. It's the format, not a decision that was made to choose one or the other. And yes, KSN did break the strike news. This post was supposed to be about the football shows, anyway. But some nervous KWCHer just had to find fault at KSN on a day it broke the strike news both on air and online.

12 and 3 had football shows similar in tone. But anonymous 9:02 is right. 10's sure is obnoxious. Maybe they figure high school kids want to feel like they are on ESPN. Only it felt more like Nikelodeon to me.

KSN did not break anything but nice try. Even if they did, no one was watching.

KWCH has about 20 minutes during their 10 and a full 30 minute show on the CW. No one comes close to the amount of content from different games. Not to mention the website.

How about all 3 drop this local coverage and show some live KU or K-State games when no one else will!!!!!

I think KAKE even with the overly hyped up Shope, has the most highlights of anyone, regardless of the amount of time. You may not see a lot of game changing moments in those highlights but I do think you get the most games. I'd rather see a few less and feel like a got a little taste of what the feeling at the game was like.

For KWCH's sake, their prep website better be good, because they bet the farm on it, and they dumped western kansas news. Good luck.

To the one KWCH guy who writes in-- you smack of the kind of annoying newsroom troll that flinches every time Cindy Klose gives you a mean look. And then you come on here and act all badass. You debate like a ten year old, making things up until, in your head, you're right. You're an embarrassment to what otherwise is a good group of people.

Good point Twelvetroll! I think I'll call you TT from now on!

A 30 minute show on the CW -- a show that has breaks.

Take out the breaks... and you have 20 minutes of stuff

WOW! Super! Thanks for sharing!

It must be so cool to be you.

Uh-oh. Is the marriage between the Eagle and KWCH over? Look who is getting very cozy with the Eagle: http://varsitykansas.com/

Methinks the end is near. Could Dave Freeman's face be plastered on the weather page of the Eagle soon?

Hal, do you have any thoughts on this new deal?

Anon 604,
Thanks for the link to the Varsity Kansas site. I didn't know that KSN has partnered up with the Eagle. I didn't know the Eagle did much with KWCH. As to what I thought of the site, if KSN is really part of a partnership with the Eagle on Varsity Kanas, its tough to notice, outside of the little logo in the top left corner of the main page. It looks like KSN is furnishing the video. You would think the video would have the KSN logo on it, like it does on TV. Maybe its all part of getting the kinks worked out. I wonder if this is a deal with the Eagle and KSN, will the writers from the Eagle appear in the future on KSN or work together on stories, non-sports? It also would be handy to have Kobbe on the clip or the text of what the highlights are next to the clip. -Hal

There is no deal.

The Eagle along with everyone else knows KSN Weather is a joke. Well along with KSN News.

Eagle still has a relationship with KWCH when it comes to news and weather. This appears to be simply a high school sports venture.

It seems the KWCH bashers, you know the ones who can't get jobs at stations that aren't a distant No. 2 or 3 in the market...actually KSN is No. 4 after FOX, are no here bitching again. Jealous much? Methinks so.

If you must know, the deal with the eagle is new. Details are still being worked out, but the foundation was just laid out this past Thursday. Expect this to grow as the season wears on and then expect some cross promotion from both sides.
As for KWCH, they have a pretty tight agreement with the eagle. Teller is always on their weather page and it's just common knowledge in the tv world that eagle favors 12 a lot. I am sure some of the happy campers from 12 who post here can shed more light on this. That is, unless they can stop screaming that KSN doesn't matter because they are 4th in the market. For a station that doesn't matter, there never seems to be a loss of attention for KSN.
Just my 2 cents.

Good point, anonymous 10:45am. The focus is squarely on KSN. I haven't heard a peep about KAKE news in weeks.

That is because KAKE barely has enough employees left to do the news!

Seriously has anyone else heard what is going on over there?

It is ridiculous they have had like five key people leave and not get replaced. I guess in the past instead of hirng fulltime people they hired mostly part-time and made them work full-time hours to save a buck or two, well now corporate is telling them they can only work their part-time help like 20 some hours a week so the full-timers are working six days a week to make up the slack....with NO overtime....can we say disgruntled workers????

KAKE is a powderkeg right now and I can't wait to see it explode. I guess they had a producer leave like a month ago and have not had one single resume from someone interested in her job. About time the rest of the world found out what a pit that place is.

Gray is really on the ropes. NewsBlues had a piece on KAKE's corporate parent. Their stock is like $1.85. Its no surprise and rather sad that they're working their people like crazy.
