Noah's Review (Flood of '08 Coverage Notes)

The 3 stations all provided strong coverage with the changing conditions throughout the day. The story lines pretty much were the record amount of rain, flooding in West Wichita, the evacuation of the Winfield campgrounds and then the other random spots in the area including El Dorado. Mixed in was some nice video of rescues. I noticed KAKE had one of people being rescued from a car. I think they needed to make a story of it like KSN which had a similar one as their newest reporter Justin Kraemer narrated the video and it had a nice breaking news type of feel. For a storm with most of its bite shown earlier in the day, most of the 10PM newscasts resembled a tired feel and they really didn't advance things nor give a polished wrap up to the coverage you would expect for a storm of this nature. I am sure people will disagree with me. I was curious how the Fox 9PM newscast would wrap things up. Forget it. It seemed like they had more on Ike then they did on this record rainfall. -Hal

Ya, Ike hitting the 4th largest city in the country. A storm that's already sending gas prices 50-cents to a dollar higher. Lots of Wichita connections to Houston and Galveston. Thousands of people left on that island who could all end up dead come sunrise. Ya no reason to cover it at all.

Hal didn't say "no reason" to cover it. He said, Fox appeared to not have much on the local flood situation. But good smokescreen, you recited the importance of covering a hurricane. Now we're all aware that we should have it in our shows today.

2 people I haven't seen in a while, Andrew Kozak on KSN and Morgan Smith on KAKE. Are they still working there? I know Morgan only worked on the air some of the time.

Steve, ever hear of something called "Vacation"? Geeze, paranoid much? Andrew is back at KSN...

Morgan Smith left like a month or 2 ago for a new job in K.C. And Andrew is still at KSN.

This Justin Kramer guy is good on KSN. Another solid reporter hire there.

Yeah he is good. Considering the last two weekend people were disasters.

I know I would have liked to have seen a home flooding story...

This is Kraemer's secnd go-around at Ksn

KAKE didn't mention the rescue death until 6 minutes into their 10 Sunday night AFTER a story about fair attendance. I guess that's more important than a guy who died trying to save people.

There were plenty of stories about people's homes flooding...about the carbon dioxide dangers the water posed and then one on mold and then one on the cleanup. You just had to watch 12 like most people do.

Is Leon Smitherman still in weather? Whenever I see him he is out doing fluff @ 5 anymore.

I thought he was solid in weather!

Leon does weather on the Noon show and then is the host for their run-around-town 5PM show.

Anon 5:53: That is the most asinine and false BS that makes this blog mostly worthless. You are the same moron that gives the rest of your KWCH coworkers a bad rep. Hal, why do you allow such posts? It does nothing to further decent conversation about our business.

1) KAKE didn't mention the rescue death story until after a fair attendance story 6 minutes into their 10 on Sunday. That's a fact.

2) KWCH did those stories. No one else really touched them. That too is a fact.

I guess the last poster wants to avoid the facts.

Then if those are facts, why isn't KWCH doing promotional pieces on why they were the only station in town to have that so early and the first? Any station would if this situation happend and the competition blew it that badly, yet you are the only one saying that.

You are a complete bogus liar and really need to quit posting your misleading information on here and give a bad name to many good people at KWCH and I'd love for you to reveal your real name and position at where you work

KAKE had a full pkg on the rescue death at 6. Sorry, KWCH wasn't the only station that had it, and had it early.

Is it even possible to have an intelligent conversation on this blog anymore? All you people end up doing is bickering with each other.

It's like a standard around here. "If you don't agree with me, or you say something I don't like, I'm gonna throw some stupid insult at you! Ha! That'll teach you...doody-head!"

Grow up people. Stop acting like five year olds and let's have some actual adult conversation here.

You are adults...right?

Amen, anon 5:43

KWCH going HD next month. KAKE and KSN still months away if not next year.

I guess being able to expand and have money helps. Maybe if KAKE saves enough money they can turn the lights back on in some parts of the building.

Let me offer this.

I work at a station other than KWCH.

I respect both of my competitors.

I do not respect the arrogance of a person who can only feel better about themselves by taking cheap shots, and consistently denigrating folks simply because of the place where they work.

Hal, I've said it time and time again... this blog doesn't serve useful purpose. It is simply a sandbox where people with the emotional maturity of a six year old come to kick sand at each other.
