KWCH On-Air Tweaks

If you live in the Wichita TV market viewing area, I assume you have seen the promos on KWCH with Michael Schwanke. Apparently he will start co-anchoring the 5PM with Cindy on Monday. I think this will help them, but not in a way many would think. It will help their reporting. He was anchoring the weekends and then reporting 3 weekdays. I assume now he'll anchor at 5PM weekdays and then report during those evenings. I think KWCH has the weakest reporting staff as a whole and having their strongest reporter, now five days a week really helps them.

Another change I noticed this morning is Kim Hynes no longer anchors the Saturday morning newscast on KWCH. I must admit I never watched the show and don't know how long the change has been in place. New hire Kara Sewell now anchors the show and is a great improvement over Kim. Kara has a lot of confidence while anchoring, yet she doesn't come across as though she is talking down to the audience. She looks young, but her demeanor definitely helps out her overall delivery. So now I am wondering who will take over for Schwanke on the weekend evenings?

On one hand I have to say, when you are #1 and you make some changes you at least aren't taking things for granted. However, I am curious if the new news director is the one behind these changes? If so, it sure hasn't taken him long to start switching things up. -Hal

Again, Hal's ignorant comments about the 12's reporting staff. The majority of KAKE's and KSN's have no experience or are new to the market and don't know what they are talking about. I still want to know what Hal's background is to allow him to make these judgements. Remember those who can't do or failed at doing... lecture.

Denise Hnytka is taking over for Schwanke.

You are the ignorant one.

The newest KSN reporter reporting in Wichita has been a reporter for ten years.

Most, if all not, of KSN reporters have been on staff for more than 4 years.

The same can't be said for KAKE, nor KWCH.

She filled in a few weeks back on the weekend and was very solid. Good moves all around it seems.

Hal- You may have been a tad tough on KWCH, however anon 2:29 is out of touch of reality. KWCH does have Schwanke, Grawae, Strader and Wilhelm who do a decent job. New hire Hyntka is good, and will be curious to see how she anchors. Looking at KSN, Powell, Meyer, and Hertneky alone have 30 years of experience. Thats not even including sometime reporter Kravarik, newby Kraemer, or Chanda Brown. I don't want this comment to turns things into a pissing match, but I thought it had to be pointed out.

Um, Anon 2:29...I think KAKE really only has one "new" reporter. Everyone else has been there for a while it seems.
As for the KWCH changes, it will be interesting to see how they go. It's good to shake things up sometimes.

Anon 2:29... I don't even work in broadcasting and I could tell you that KSN's reporting crew has more experience than 12's.

Go complain somewhere else.

The changes at 12 were made by the GM and dittoed by the new ND. Of the three stations, only KSN has experienced beat reporters who call contacts regularly. At 12, Schwanke, Wilhelm, Hynes and Rocha are the stronger reporters. Cliff Judy and Strader are solid, but need experience. Grawe's sing-song delivery should be put to an end. Waiting to see how the new kids do. Hear former KWCH Anchor Denise Eck was in for an interview as the Number 2. The question is: will KWCH devote the necessary resources to support beat reporters? Is anyone watching local TV news more than twice a week?

1230 Thinks he knows what's going on at 12 when it's obvious he doesn't work there. How funny.

If KSN's reporters are so great, why haven't they moved up. The reason: they aren't so great. It's that simple.

I live in rural Kansas and it can be hard to get local news from my area on the local stations. I used to be in the radio news business over a decade ago and know these areas are a starting ground for talent. They do their time and move on. I have never been a fan of hers, but hope KSN's Aileen Simborio has done just that. I haven't seen her on the air for almost at least a week maybe even two weeks. I never thought I would say this but I actually have enjoyed Anita anchoring the local news cut-in instead of Aileen. Aileen seems like she could care less about what she is reading on-air and about Kansas for that matter, and would rather just get out of here and onto a bigger market. Hopefully she isn't on vacation and is onto a bigger market. I wouldn't miss her.

I saw on KAKE a couple of days ago that the late Jim O'Donnell was inducted posthumously into the KAB Hall of Fame. I was intrigued so I went online and discovered that also KWCH's Merril Teller was also inducted this year as well. Its good to know that 2 great meteorologists were recognized this year.

Congrats to KSN for all their success this year in the KAB's

Was Mike Smith ever inducted into the Hall of Fame? I consider him an '80's version of Jay Prader.

Many at the station don't miss her either.

KAB's have become all about "who you know." That's the only reason KSN won.

I am interested in who anonymous 1023 was talking about?

Anon 511,

Anon 1023 was refering to Aileen who looks like she never left KSN, unfortunately and was anchoring tonight. :(

I feel bad for you guys in that the lack of talent in the Wichita market means that Schwenke is considered a good reporter.
