A critical look at the Wichita TV news

Potpourri

Blog Poll - I know the poll on the blog is far from being scientific, but I think it does deserve a little conversation. Since there are changes going on at KSN, the poll asked what 1 on-air cosmetic change at KSN would you make? The choices were dumping Dave, Anita, Paul or nothing. This was posted after Paul was moved from anchor at 10PM to a reporter role. The results favored dumping Dave (46%), Anita (34%), Paul (13%) and then nothing (4%). You faithful readers will know I have never been a fan of Paul's. Once again, I don't think this poll is necessarily the Gospel truth, but it is what it is. I think it collaborates what some may be thinking, KSN had other issues on the anchor desk it needed to deal with before Paul. As for the blip in the Carrie Renger's column in the Eagle about the staffing change.

I think the quote from the news director could be put into a yet unwritten book called, "Putting the Spin on Anchor Changes in TV News." He said as quoted in the article, "In any business, you should always play to your strength," he says. "Paul's a terrific reporter."

I have liked Paul's on-air presence doing live stories, but once again that is nice spin instead of saying, "We don't want him to anchor our 10PM show." He is still doing the 5PM. Although it was sent as a comment, a faithful reader e-mailed me to ask the question, "How many chances with co-anchors will Anita get? When do they realize she could be a problem?" As the Eagle article pointed out, Paul was the 3rd male anchor to join Anita on the desk in a little less than a decade and that doesn't include the various stints she went solo.

Mapping Software - Also I have enjoyed looking at the Map Clusters software I added to the site. Like the poll, you can't get real excited over it, but I enjoy it. Although they probably will never come back to the site, I would like to say, "Guten Tag," to the one hit I got from somewhere in Europe, possibly Germany?

What Not to Blog About - I guess I learned at least one thing this weekend. Viewers to this blog don't share my enjoyment of academic studies about the business. I thought the study from 1998 would illicit some interesting dialog about the industry. This was the smallest reaction I had gotten from a post, since I started.

New Nielsen Market Rankings Unveiled - Nielsen tweaks its market sizes from time to time. Although Wichita added over 600 TV homes, the market dropped 2 sizes and now clocks in at #69. Tucson and Roanoke-Lynchburg overtook Wichita in the latest chart. Here's a link to the updated version. (Sorry to the reader who doesn't like the Lost Remote blog.) -Hal

Thanks for the link!

As for the reader who doesn't like Lost Remote - there is a substantial and honorable club in this regard. We can direct him as to where to pay the annual dues for membership.

Lost Remote is a site that believes everyone can be a journalist. That is not the case. Just because you might have a camera or a blog doesn't make you responsible and more importantly credible. These people are not accountable to anyone. They put out there what may be fact but what could just as easily be fiction of bias.

What are your thoughts on the new girl over at KAKE, Abby I think her name it. Since you bash reporter who are much more seasoned I'd be curious if you have some thoughts about her. But since you adore KAKE you probably don't.

I'd be interested in what you thought about the coverage of the Dillon's Hutchinson ordeal Tuesday afternoon.

KSN led with weather rather than a massive standoff/hostage situation in Hutch. Just shows you they don't know what they are doing over there.

Anon #3,
You wanted to know my comments on Abby Barnett. I'll be blatantly honest, Wichita should not be her first stop fresh from college. Thats what smaller markets and bureaus are for. But the economic choices and factors made by TV stations, will make hires such as Barnett, more and more common in the future. As for Barnett, lets start with the positive. She has confindence in her delivery which often times you don't see in reporters fresh out of college. The problem is often times her stories could be told in a more understandable way. On Live breaking news she can be OK, but if complicated factors are involved, her confindence in delivery can be overshadowed by her lack of communicating what she does know. I think a few years maturing at a bureau or smaller market would have done her well, but I guess Wichita is a starter's market for some. -Hal

To the anti-KSN poster, as Hal reported a while ago, KSN always has 15 seconds of weather in front of the start of its show. It's done in other markets, too. It doesn't mean they didn't choose the right lead. While you're complaining about that, maybe you didn't notice that KSN also scooped your station and was the first to report the FBI's connection of the bomb scare to several other around the country. So start being fair in your criticism, or don't criticize at all. The lens can easily be pointed in your direction, too.

She was hired because KAKE needed someone ASAP and she happened to be an intern.

Stop critiquing individual talent. It's rude and your opinion doesn't matter. I don't care if someone does ask for it. You wrote that review like you are an agent or a news director. You are neither... you're just some unemployed jerk that probably couldn't cut it in this business and has to start a blog to get noticed.

posted like a true KSNer. Let's look at the facts. All of KSN's newscasts already start 1 minute or 2 after KWCH and KAKE. You add into that 30 seconds of weather and you are not getting to news until 5:02 or 6:02 at the earliest.

You lead with the biggest story of the day. PERIOD. Did anyone at KSN study journalism. It's the story that matters most to people. You already have a first forecast in the first 10 minutes. Leading with weather when there are no storms, no threat of severe weather is irresponsible and amateur.

The fact is these "changes" are not and will not due anything to help KSN's pathetic 3rd place ratings, yes you are a distant 3rd no matter what some KSNers are posting on here. You are a joke and deservedly so.

Also...you were not first with the FBI link. Again another fact you got wrong.

The other night I watched KSN at 10. There were a bunch of murders over the weekend and other news, and it starts off the top with Andrew in weather talking about the "firstcast" for tomorrow to get your day started. What a way to start a newscast, when more important things that people actually care about are happening. No, instead we're treated to the weatherguy's sugary "start to the day" forecast. What a crock. KSN has no idea how to do news and it shows.

Waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

What someone upset that Hal decided to rip someone at their station (KAKE) for a change? He's done it to everyone's, except KAKE's reporters, for a long time now. Get over it or get out of the biz.

Leading with weather in the morning is one thing. Leading with it at 5, 6 and 10 when there is no reason to is dumb.
