Fox news At 9: The New "Heidi"

For you young ones, this will require a bit of an explanation. Stay with me on this one.

In 1968 the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets were playing for the AFL Championship. Jets were up 32-29 with 65 seconds left to go in the game, when NBC stopped that broadcast to air the already scheduled made-for-TV movie "Heidi." What followed, the Raiders would score two touchdowns in less than a minute and end up winning the game in what went down as one of the greatest endings of any sport ever. Fast forward nearly 40 years later and in a much smaller example.

The All-Star game is tied at 3 and in fabled Yankee Stadium. My total recollection may be a tad foggy, because I was close to being asleep with the game on in the background. The American League had just gotten a double in the bottom of the 12th inning, when Fox 4/KWCH's All-Star Rebecca Gannon's voice pops up and the 9 O'Clock (now past 11:30) news starts. After what seemed like a few minutes just as quickly as it started, the newscast is switched back over to baseball. Fortunately for the local Fox station, no runs were scored and the classic would continue for 3 more innings. The newscast was definitely on tape. Sure its an All Star game, not football, but what an unfortunate glitch by the folks at the local Fox station. When I realized what happened I had to wonder how many Wichita area TVs were sacrificed by fans disgruntled about the missing game and at a time when it was tied and a runner on 2nd in extra innings. I was expecting an All-Star cast of Derek Jeter, J.D. Drew, or Mariano Rivera, not Rebecca Gannon (she's definitely not an All-Star of Wichita Media). -Hal

I'm not a TV news person. Can someone please explain to me how that happens? And how often do TV stations tape the entire newscast and play it off as live?

Not very often do stations tape their newscasts. It happened on Fox, since KWCH produces the show and uses some of the same resources and its possible the 9PM newscast could start at 10PM, they have to put it on tape to avoid that problem. KSN sometimes tape parts of the 5PM.

KSN tapes feature parts of its 5pm news. Not the actual presentation of hard news stories. That said, the KWCH-Fox newscasts happen so near each other that at some point taping might be necessary. You can't have two live shows at once.

I think its safe to say that morale was low at KSN. I am surprised that with the announcement that Todd was leaving, the attitude has improved for most people in the news room. Obviously there is some uneasiness as to who will come in, but I think employees are willing to give a little if it means their ratings might improve a little and excited that Todd will be headed to Tulsa.

FOX is sometimes taped, KWCH never is.

Some may be reservations against some local and internal candidates who might be in strong contention for the KSN news director spot, but compared to what KSN has had in place for the last 5 years, A DIRECTION and VISION would be wonderful to thing to have. Good Luck Tulsa. If the Tulsa Fox station is a bottom dweller in the market currently, plan on them staying there then with him. Ratings wont probably drop by much under his watch, but dont expect much of an increase.

I think calling them the New "Heidi" is a little over the top. After all it is an All-Star game after all not game 7 of the World Series.

I am young and new exactly what you were talking about before without the explanation. Not off of us from my generation are uniformed.

Jon,
FYI, The "New Heidi" term was done a little "tongue and cheek," but also as I said in the blog a comparison to a smaller level. -Hal

Jason Kravarik will get the job at KSN. Head for zee hills.....

So Jon the people in your generation that aren't "uniformed" are they "plain clothed"?

After reading that paragraph I don't think you are capable of reading, or writing, much less contributing anything intelligent to this conversation. I have a suggestion... wait till your are at LEAST in your mid-thirties before you post again.

KAKE used to tape things and give people at home the impression it was live. And they still have certain elements of newscasts that are on tape and appear to be live. Here is a hint pay attention to clothing...amazing how it will change in between segments.

The "explainers" (which I feel is an oxymoron..they don't explain squat) KSN airs are taped and they have the appearance of live TV.

And that dumb ass sports show at KWCH is taped sometimes and passed off as live. And I know the KWCH cheerleaders will blast back saying it is not, but that is a LIE!

My point is everyone in the market tapes elements and passes them off as live.

But as far as taping whole newscasts......well that is a differrent story.

Anyone in the biz who has had to stay until midnight, or later, broadcasting a newscast will tell you how nice it would be if we could tape the thing and go home, BUT that does not happen. While there at times might be a few things here and there that are memorex for the most part everything else is live.

Fox and KWCH share a control room and crew and it is impossible for both of them to do news at the same time. SO when it looks like there might be a conflict then the FOX news goes on tape. Honestly that is not shocking. Why would KWCH put their number one newscast in peril over that FOX piece of dung?

Out of curiosity & on a different note, I think Deb Farris is awesome at 4 pm on KAKE. But, when this newscast started it was Sidney Fisher. She was quickly gone. I don't recall any discussion about that. What happened?

I couldn't tell if KAKE's story on the courtroom outburst was good. I couldn't hear it over that strange music. Weird.

I posted at 11:56 on July 16. I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how they can start the news while the game is still going on. Is it an automation problem? Was someone asleep at the switch? How does that happen?

I work at KSN. Morale is very good. We are sorry to see Todd go.

Anonymous said...

I work at KSN as well. Morale is fine, and its business as usual. Todd just had a great opportunity come up. Nothing more, nothing less than what you have heard.

KSN has some great things in store. just wait and see.

Morale is fine and wonderful: the best it has been in 6 years, because Todd is gone!!! Nothing more nothing less.

Yeah more changes. I work at KSN and I hope the do not promote from inside the news department. They need to hire an outside candidate.

To poster at 8:13
More than likely someone just hit a wrong button. The taped show was probably loaded into a computer awaiting the end of the game, when someone hit the wrong button. Also, the extra innings probably meant master control operators had to improvise and put stuff into new commercial breaks that weren't originally scheduled. That's a guess, but the blunder was probably simpler than you're thinking.

Jason is the last person that needs to be news director. He is better off doing his in depth pieces.

Actually Sports Sunday is live. When you say people will say you lie it's because you are.... lying that is.

If Jason Kravarik were to become news director, I hope he could still do stories because, I would miss his stories because they were always well done. However, maybe he could use that execution he showed on stories and expand those types of stories on KSN with other reporters.

Big staff meeting taking place @ KAKE at 12:15 this afternoon. I wonder what they are going to announce.

Anonymous said...

I assume the "big" staff meeting didn't yield anything major at KAKE?

Re: the KAKE meeting.
If you weren't there..it was none of your business.

Was the meeting at KAKE about staycations?

So many, too many, staff members wanting to take staycations at the same time. How to schedule things so that everyone would eventually get the oppurtunity to take a staycation.
