KSN News Director Resigns; Headed to Tulsa

Well, make it 3 days in a row. OK maybe 2 days in a row (KAKE's GM Day 1 and then KWCH's news director and assignment editor Day 2), then a 12 day break and now Day 3: KSN news director Todd Spessard resigns. The Eagle reports he is headed to Tulsa after spending over 5 years in Wichita. I think this marks a unique time in which 2 of the 3 TV stations are looking for news directors after the announcement that KWCH's News Director, Michele Gors and the Assignment Editor all resigned back on July 1. That added to the news a day before KWCH's announcement that KAKE's General Manager was gone. What do you make of this sudden movement of management? Nothing. It just proves a business that has always been a little unsteady, definitely faces an uncertain future. With this change coming soon for the stations, where do I see them?

KWCH - Still #1, although I never have seen the actual ratings. I depend on all of your comments to hear what is happening. According to comments about the last ratings, KWCH was down, but still held a solid lead over the other 2. Between KWCH and KSN, I think the KWCH job would be more attractive, especially as long as Roger and Cindy remain in the anchor chairs. I think they remain #1, maybe not as solid of a lead, but they still will dominate. It is important they don't get too cocky resting on that top perch, especially if KSN gets more competitive under a new news director and challenges KAKE. The two basement dwellers could get very competitive amongst each other and together may take away some KWCH viewers, but that is only a, "MAY."

KSN -I must agree with what anon 10 said on the previous post:
If only Dave And Anita would follow, then there would be a real development.
Whoever takes over the news department can make all the changes they want, but as long as Dave and Anita stay in their chairs, things will remain the same. I don't know how long they have been in their spots together, at least 5 years. Five plus years is a lot of patience at trying to see if they can improve ratings. I don't think that's worked out too well.

KAKE - They went through a news director shake up over a year ago and now a GM change. I cuss KAKE out more than the other 2, because I think they are over-the-top much of the time, however part of me likes that. They definitely show an aggressiveness and they aren't afraid to promote that on the air. They were for the most part able to quietly move a younger Jeff Herndon into Larry Hatteberg's main anchor spot. At the time it happened, I thought there would have been far more negative fall out. As I said earlier, I don't think they will be able to compete for the top spot as long as Roger and Cindy remain in their chairs. As for looking at KSN, behind them, I think it all depends on just how serious KSN is about changing things. If upper management exercises too much control on a new news director and leaves things the same at KSN, KAKE will have no worries of KSN catching up to them. -Hal

I am curious if KWCH's news director has another job or if she could be considered a possibilty for KSN's and also what is former KAKE news director Glen Horn doing? Could he wiggle into KSN or maybe even KWCH?

KWCH has more to offer (bigger staff with more experience, a brand new addition and a company, Schurz, that is one of the few financially solid media companies out there right now) than KSN. They are still owned by a company that's basically an investment firm more concerned with saving/making money than quality or journalism. They have tried everything in the past year and are still down there.

The summer is when big changes happen, so its just coincidence this is all happening simultaneously.

But the combination of an Economy in the Tank, fewer people watching TV News, and in a couple of cases---and perhaps most importantly-- parent companies that are truly on the brink.....you have unprecedented anxiety.

TV stations are used to "rainy day periods". The difference this time is the parent companies can not take on any more water. Very dangerous situation.

Forget the ratings.... they are irrelevant to the people in this market right now. The ratings were established decades ago by people who are long gone.

Those are incorrect numbers. It looks like someone is trying to fudge up the KAKE numbers in the metro in that calculation. Statewide, which is the DMA and what matters, its 12, 10, 3.

And one book doesn't mean squat. The ratings were down across the board for everyone because of the prolonged writers strike and not all the viewer came back in time.

You can tell the poster is from KAKE because they put a #1 only when KAKE wins a time period not the times 12 does.

BTW: The Today Show is #1 not GMA. Another reason why the numbers are BS.

More sping from a KAKer. You are the ones who pulled a sweeps series "Staycation" only because of criticism on this board. What does that say about you? When Gray starts ordering layoffs and cutbacks (like EVERY large media company has), you'll be begging for a job someplace else.

Gray Television:

>>$2.28 /share

>>Total Debt: $865 Million
>>Total Value: $97 Million

Interesting ratings that were given. Wonder what the Sport Show ratings are for KAKE and KWCH.

Well, you posted some numbers...Great! But, what did you post? Households, Demos (which one), DMA, Metro? Come on, you've got to be more specific.

Anonymous said...

DMA numbers are what advertisers buy...not Metro numbers.

Anonymous said...

Are those Metro ratings?

Anonymous said...

Hal, the numbers posted by anon 2:57 are wrong.

These are not the numbers put out by Nielsen. They are not the numbers for the statewide DMA or the metro numbers. This person is trying to pull a fast one over on you and the rest of us.

Anonymous said...

In a DMA this spread out... metro numbers are just as if not more important.

Anonymous said...

KWCH is #1 at 5 and 6 in the metro and the whole DMA. Those poster's #'s are WRONG.

Anon 528: where did you get the idea that KAKE "pulled" the Staycation series because of comments on this board? If you go to their website they're promoting another Staycation piece for tonight.
I'm sure you think your anonymous critique of a story on some stupid blog holds weight with the powers-that-be at Wichita TV stations..but clearly it doesn't.

Rumor was Disney World was getting massive summer vacation cancellations from Kansans who opted to go to the local Petting Zoo instead.

I guess everyone assumed it was pressure from the Disney Corporation, owner of KAKE's affiliate, that prompted KAKE to drop Staycations.

Incorrect assumption, apparently.

Glen Horn is in Buffalo,NY at the bottom rated station. While he brings some excitement into a market, his style doesn't fit the plodding manner KSN has demonstrated for half a decade or more.

Anonymous said...

Plodding style?

Hell if Roger and Cindy were any more plodding they'd put everyone to sleep.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I agree: Roger and Cindy are plodders. Or, they're produced in a plodding way. When the majority of your viewers are getting up there and plodding along themselves, plodding may work best with most Wichitans who want the same 'ol, same 'ol. Isn't it time for KWCH tomix it upa bit?

Why do ya'll even care who the directors, ratings etc. are?
Either watch them OR DON'T. How hard of a decision is THAT? Jeez, get a different hobby.
