The Sale of KSN

Thanks to frequent poster, "Jon" for pointing me to the news on kansas.com that KSN had been sold. I don't know much about the new owners. I am solely basing this off of the Eagle article saying it was announced in LA.
http://kansas.com/news/updates/story/130589.html

After I read the Eagle article, I looked at the comments from readers. Yikes. There wasn't a lot of love for KSN, that's for sure. People on their site certainly are reacting, so I'll open it up for discussion tonight on this blog. Here are a few of my reactions.
First will be a question. Will KSN remain, for the most part, a #3 ranked station, or will new ownership see the possibility of dollar signs if they can improve the on-air product and the ratings? In previous posts' comments people have talked about a smaller work force KSN has compared to the others. Will new ownership shrink or expand the staff?
Hopefully a new ownership group may bring serious on-air cosmetic changes the station needs in its personalities. We have talked about their inadequacies before in previous posts. New ownership might need to clean house with management to get a fresh view of what viewers must want to watch, since the current has added an anchor that to me is hard to watch and kept one who hasn't delivered in the years she has been on the desk. The comments on the Eagle's site are getting a little harsh and maybe are just from the non-television industry-angry-disgruntled folks, so I'd be curious what you all think will or will not happen in this sale. -Hal

I think they need to start at the small positives they have and work their way up. I think they have a pretty solid reporting staff compared to the others. As for anchors, keep Kobbe. If given the right people on the desk (and it wouldn't take much) he could really bring out genuine personalities on the air, something they are lacking now everywhere on the anchor desk, except sports.

They need to create their own brand and stick to it and make changes to the main anchors. The weekend and morning staffs are just fine, but Paul and Dave Freeman probably need to go if possible. Bring in Mark Bogner to Evenings and Leon Smitherman to mornings and hire a solid meteorologist to add to the team for the departure of Freeman. KSN has not had a strong male anchor since Todd McDermott and John Holt were there, that's been over 12 years now..

Looks like the web and graphics will be changing.

If KSN does improve the biggest threat will be to KAKE.

KWCH is so far ahead of KAKE in most areas that they probably don't have much to worry about.

If I were KAKE I'd start taking a look in the rear-view instead of trying to pass the big rig ahead of me.

I like Dave, Leon, Mark and Andrew fror weather. I wouldn't change them. What needs to be changed is ANITA, period.

Reading today's article a qoute from the new company's Chief Exec has me wondering what will exactly happen. He says they want to build a Kansas Network starting with Wichita and including Topeka and exploring Kansas City. The KC part leaves me confused, but a Kansas Network starting in Wichita, does that mean anchors, weather and sports all out of Wichita and making a Topeka a larger sized bureau?

I agree that a major house cleaning needs to happen. Buck and Spessard need to go. Fast. Anita and Paul aren't strong anchors, while Stephanie and Anthony are. I agree that Dave needs to go; bring Mark to the forefront and show Leon more. KSN is all about pushing Dave and Anita that they've let everything else set in the back burner. Frankly, it's going to take alot of work to be able to catch up to KAKE even, let alone KWCH.

Casino coverage has been terrible, seems like KWCH is almost cheering on the NO votes to me....

Wrong again. KWCH has done stories about pro-casino groups & anti-casino groups. They've done stories about if the ads are true or not on both sides. They've looked at the negative impact in other communities who have casinos. They've looked at the positive impacts. Why just today they covered a debate between both sides and evidentally are hosting a debate streamed on their website next week. I don't see anyone else looking at the issue as deeply or fairly.

The reason you think that the No's are getting more play is because they are more mobilized than the Yes people, especially as of late. That is part of the reason the polls show this is now a very close election. Church have become involved.

You are wrong sir.
