1/2 way through Sweeps: Finally an OK day
I think we are about 1/2 through Sweeps and I must say Thursday finally served up offerings a little better than a normal day's effort. KWCH's piece on a cold case was interesting and the production was good, but at the same time didn't get in the way of the piece. KAKE's piece on "stretching Gas," was pretty decent for a KAKE series. Not too over-the-top and actually set up an interesting experiment about whether shifting a car into neutral and other stuff while driving would save gas. Apparently it does. There were some tricks in it but it wasn't overly technically produced, and was good. Meanwhile KSN sent a crew down to Louisiana to follow some Derby citizens who went down there right after a hurricane and documented their trip back to Louisiana. Today's pieces weren't too bad as the Louisiana town was genuinely touched by the help from Derby. They teased there will be more stories Tomorrow. I wonder how they'll be able to squeeze more out of this topic tomorrow. I am curious what you all think about the Sweeps so far. I'll be the first one to say the period is always over done, but I must say this month so far has been a disappointment and it hasn't been that the stories have been over hyped. Often times I think all the ads are silly and oversell the stories. When they run I often feel disappointed. This month so far, I haven't felt like they have been oversold, but there really hasn't been many that kept my interest. At this point, the KAKE gas story probably held my interest more than anything yet in November. It might have less to do with the overall execution and more with the fact of doing a different kind of gas story for once. So many times it seems when local stations do gas stories, it is when gas prices go up and then they shove cameras into customers and ask them how does it feel. Then of course the same answers we heard a month ago when the previous story came up are said. So congrats to KAKE for getting a different angle with the gas stories. It should be noted, I saw a couple of stories this week about a place in town which is redoing SUVs and other cars of celebrities to make them more fuel efficient and that to some degree was a different gas story. We can only hope the remaining days left in Sweeps can produce some more interesting pieces. -Hal

I can't believe those "dirty" jobs with Paul!?
What station will be the first to do an all out attack on the David Bremby denial of the coal plant expansion in Western Kansas on a sweeps investigative piece? The reason I say this is because left and right he's approving ethanol plants which use a ton of water in dry Western Kansas and pollute, yet he wont approve the coal plant.. I also understand Bremby has a shady past in a few regards..
Garden City and this proposed power plant are in the DMA...
I'm also tired of Dave Freeman acting like the forecast is so nice when its dry everyday.. He's the only meteorologist who doesn't acknowledge we desperately need rain and calls these days with wind, and fluctuating temperatures "wonderful."
None hopefully. It is not the business of newsrooms to set out to attack people. It is is to present the facts and let everyone make a judgement for themselves.
The fact that you want to attack someone because you don't agree with his decision means you have business in this business.
I think the coal plant issue should be covered as well. My vote is for KAKE doing it since they already have western KS covered the best.
As far as Dave Freeman is concerned, that is the truth. I watched all three this weekend and Jay (who for some reason is STILL covering weekends) Andrew and Ross all talked about the need for rain or at least touched upon it. Also saw Monday morning and Ben talked about hoping for rain. I think Freeman is just far removed from reality and the real needs of the rural population- maybe too much of that HAIR DYE from last week is seeping in.
If you think KAKE covers anything but Wichita you are sadly mistaking. They have one bureau in Garden City, KWCH has four (Goodland, Salina, Hays and Dodge). I don't think KSN even has bureaus.
KWCH doesn't have anyone in Goodland...
KSN does not have anyone at its Great Bend or Garden City satellite bureaus and I think that hurts them tremendously..
KAKE only has the KUPK bureau but covers SW KS decently..
Its not bad judgement to question Bremby...
Why is it not fair to present the facts.. He approves ethanol plants which pollute and use tons of water and denies a coal plant expansion..
There's alot of questionable reasons for that coal plant being denied and I dont think the media is hitting him or the Governor that hard on the issue..
And you can't tell me this business in this market is not influenced by this coal plant decision because ads ran on all the stations in Kansas for and against the coal plant expansion which meant dollars to the stations.. And a stronger or weaker economy in SW Kansas has an influence on the television stations in Wichita because thats in the DMA..
My comment was to the poster who said "to do an all out attack on the denial."
It is not our job to attack anyone. Ask though questions, yes. Attack someone is unprofessional and amateur.
Regarding the weather comments. So you think that a weather guy should say that a 70 degree day in November is horrible because it's not raining? Last time I checked those guys didn't actually control the weather with their commentary, as lame as it may be... Saying we need rain and actually GETTING rain are 2 different things. And FYI... 70 Degrees in November is a nice day, regardless of what you believe.
Almost 80 degrees in November is global warming. There didn't used to be 80 degree days this late, except in Rio.
Considering many people in this market are going to have a lousy wheat crop because it hasn't rained in a month, 70 and dry and windy is a horrible day with no rain in sight...
That must be Dave himself posting there, nobody sticks up for him
