The Weekend Morning Show Question

I could have called this post dumb and dumber, but that would probably be giving some involved the benefit of the doubt while being too harsh with others. I watched the weekend morning shows as the excitement was building about the upcoming KU-MU game. I must say KAKE was smart going live from Kansas City this morning. On the outside one may ask what benefit is there going live for most of the hour show, 10 hours before game time, but ESPN's Gameday has turned the otherwise nervous hours before a game into an event itself outside of the stadium. Thus the live shots on the KAKE morning show with KAKE's newest and best reporter Natasha Trelfa were good and had some fun excitement. Meanwhile back in Wichita their weekend morning anchor pair is a contrast of styles. Cayle Thompson actually shows some promise as an anchor and should be given more opportunities when Larry wants a weekend evening off. Good genuine interest and personality on camera. On the other hand his female co-anchor, Rachel Phillips reminds me of a gal who would be the first to finish off a case of beer with you and then belch the alphabet. Maybe the main topics of the morning with football caused her to act dumber than normal (not so sure if this isn't a common thing), but I am curious if she dumbs things down on a typical weekend. Meanwhile if you watched KWCH, the life was being sucked out of you. If anyone needs a co-anchor to rescue her on the set, its Kim Hynes. Flipping between KWCH and KAKE's morning cast was definitely a contrast in styles. If you get up first thing on Saturday, flip on that KWCH show, and are contemplating whether to wake up, one look at that show and you'll be back to sleep in no time. -Hal

You'll make that KWCH go getter insane with that blog Hal... A bit rough on Rachel as well on KAKE too... But weekend mornings are for those who are just starting out in anchoring and learning the craft.. and a spot for the backup meteorologists who fill in for vacationing meteorologists, to have a regular time slot

Actually I think KAKE did very well. Rachel was just a bit rough. I am curious if that personality just comes out around football and all. Maybe that was the deal this morning, but overall KAKE did quite well this morning. -Hal

How much of a show do you think is the producer's responsiblity, and how much is the anchor's? Because a boring show or a bad segway is a two way street -- it can be a producer stacking problem just as much as it can be an anchor's delivery.

I think it is a mindset that starts at the top and works its way down. I think it has a lot to do with producers and the things they pick out for a show, but there needs to be some direction given to be a little light hearted. I think KAKE's weekend morning show does that well, maybe Rachel just needs to be reeled in slightly. -Hal

I thought you said this was a critical look at tv media in Wichita? You're comment about Rachel is really ridiculous and easy for someone behind a keyboard to do. Love to see you saw that to her face, but you obviously don't have the balls.

I understand everybody is entitled to an opinion... but ouch.
Both Kim and Rachel work hard, and would probably agree there's always room for improvement somewhere.
But let's also remember both stations are working with smaller crews Saturday mornings, and each is doing what it can to get a good, clean show on the air.
Rachel produces 10's show. I don't imagine juggling that responsibility with anchoring, crew coordinating, show timing, and getting in breaking news is very easy.
Kim does an entire two hours by herself... the only interaction she has is during weather or an interview segment. That's hard on any morning anchor trying to get through a newscast.
A co-anchor, a producer, a few extra hands on-deck would probably help both shows... but I think they've also shown they can handle their own.

This is more of Hal, who does not work in this business and therefore feels the ability to lecture, talking nonsense again.

Remember, those who can do. Those you can't insult others.
