A critical look at the Wichita TV news

A Softer KAKE??

I couldn't help but wonder when watching the "Breaking News" on the 7 year old shot on Wednesday Night, how nice it was to NOT feel like I was hanging on the edge of a cliff while watching KAKE. Why? New reporter Natasha Trelfa handled the news very calm. That is real refreshing coming from KAKE where reporters (mostly former but still a few current) yell and get so ramped up over the smallest matters that when something a little more tragic like a 7 year old is shot occurs, it just blends in with a normal KAKE over hyped night. Wednesday was a little different. It caused me to realize that KAKE has lost a few reporters in recent months who had a more alarming delivery and style and now with them gone it brings a more calm sense and welcoming one at that. I think Natasha will quickly become one of KAKE's top reporters, merely for her calm matter-of-fact on camera style. Don't get me wrong. Although she has a calm manner to her delivery she still delivers urgency. That can be a tough thing to balance. We'll have to see how she reports through the next few weeks. Hopefully she is the beginning of what I hope might be a softer, yet still urgent when needed, KAKE.
As for Sweeps: the two pieces I saw were typical and over hyped. I thought KAKE's story was an interesting idea in theory that license plates are not available for family members of loved ones who lost their lives in military service. But not surprisingly, it came off a little too dramatic and overdone. KWCH's smoke detector story seemed like an idea probably done elsewhere in another market and used to spawn a story here. If anything the story showed that smoke detectors do work and people should have them. Did we need an over 2 minute piece to tell us that. No, but there are dumb people out there. (One interesting thing learned from the story was that the detector used in most homes works just as well as the other types shown). As for KSN's offering, I didn't see anything hyped or built as a sweeps piece and I stopped watching the 10PM after 10 minutes so maybe I missed something. -Hal

KAKE's slowly but surely gotten a bit softer since Glen Horn was let go in 2006.. Dave Grant still does his style, and keeps KAKE as the fast, tougher station, but its not nearly as hardcore and aggressive now as it was from 2004-2006 when Glen Horn was the News Director

Hal -

Too dramatic? Maybe you're just too cold.

No Dr. Phil, last I checked my temp is running at 98.5.

While I agree with you on a lot of Natasha's reports, Friday's was a groaner. No reporter should wear the t-shirt and the ball cap for a live shot -- what happened to lack of bias?

Now if the Wingnuts fold, embezzle money, molest a child, etc., you've got your walking Wingnuts billboard burned into viewers brains. How will you report unbiasedly after modeling their merchandise?

How was Natasha's Friday report a groaner? So what...she wore a baseball cap and a T-Shirt. This is the perfect kind of story for a "let your hair down" kind of look. I think she's doing a excellent job so far.

I see KSN is looking for a reporter and a meteorologist. They probably need 2 or 3 more reporters, but who in weather is leaving?

Softer but still wrong. They had for 12 hours on their website that two people died in a crash in Reno County. It was one. It seems they may be softer but like most things with KAKE, the facts are still wrong.

I would say that it's highly unlikely a :15 intro and a :15 tag in a Wingnuts T-Shirt will be "burned into viewers brains" as anon #2 says.

As long as we brought up reporters, I give KSN one thing: They have the best reporters in the market, though the most tenuous anchors (besides Kobbe). KWCH, on the other hand, has the best anchors and the worst reporters (except Schwanke and Grawe. Yes, Grawe). KAKE is just obnoxious all around.

If you really think KSN's monotone staff is the best you should get out of the biz now. KSN is in last, way last for a reason and that's part of it.

Noone in weather is leaving at KSN unless you include Leon Smitherman who will soon take over the 5PM show when Paul leaves. Still Leon will do weather at Noon. Why they need another full-time weather person is unknown, when they still are lacking people in many other spots at the station. If they aren't careful, they may have to expand the weather lab just to fit in all the meteorologists, or maybe I should say to fit in a couple of the egos.

and whos egos are you talking about? I just CAN'T imagine anyone in that weatherlab with one...

actually out of all of them, I give the ego award to just 1.....YOU know

Wichita Police are investigating two stabbings that happened within minutes of each other, but they are not connected. KAKE is wrong again.

There was a six hour difference.

Its one thing to have an ego in TV, its sort of required.. Its another to be so blatant obvious on air like that weatherguy at KSN is.. Whats even more funny about it is out of the 3 chief meteorologists in town, he's clearly the third best.

omg, this guy who's criticizing KAKE's website must have a serious inferiority complex. That is laughable.

Oh Please. How about KWCH's dimwitted, stumbling, bumbling cheap-as-they-come reporters? I'd take KAKE and KSN's reporters over 12 any day. I think that's fairly obvious. Names like Anthony Powell, Chris Frank, Cayle Thompson and Jason Kravarik go a lot farther than Linda Mares, Kim Hynes and Rebecca Gannon. It's so funny how all this one 12 employee has to defend itself is the ratings success of the station's anchor team. Which pays him nothing more than he'd make anywhere else.

Dana Hertneky is also good. Speaking of, she's pregnant. Could that be why Jennifer Pruitt has come out of hiding? She did well the other night.
