While the World Turns, KSN Leads with Speed Limits to Goddard

Its easy to spot a slow news day when three stations lead with three different stories at 10PM, but for some stations it may be slower than others. For KSN, their lead story was basically the changing of speed limit signs on the way to Goddard. Reporter Josh Witsman did what he could with a terrible subject for a lead story, and for that matter it wasnt even worth doing a long form story. They also had a similar treatment at 6PM on this. Maybe I do wish Sweeps stories were still around in June. Meanwhile KAKE led with a decent story from Cayle Thompson on a plot by Tracallen Streeter, who was convicted of wounding a Hutch police officer and shooting at two Deputies, to escape from custody. Since it was a slow news day, not a bad way to lead the newscast. I think the others had the information, but with graphics and the anchors reading the information. Meanwhile KWCH chose to lead with the increase numbers of child abuse cases in the area. Not a bad story, but one I think others have had throughout the week. Once again, for a slow night, an OK time to take a closer look at the problem. If anything it prevents a station from leading with changing speed limit signs. -Hal

12's lead took a bigger more in-depth look at the problem while those during the week, even some on 12 focused primarily on the neglect cases from that day.

I thought Megan Strader's pkg from Greensburg on some people not being allowed permits to rebuild was quite interesting. It seems she and 12 are really the only ones doing actually stories from Greensburg anymore on a weekly basis, and not just the standard news release informationl stories.

To the first commenter-- I heard KWCH is hiring. Is your only job at the station to make bogus replies to this blog? Your subtly amazes me (I'm being sarcastic, in case this is over your head).

Both KAKE and KSN did stories focusing on neglect cases-- they actually did them on days when there were cases-- not a couple of days after, as did KWCH on Thursday. And before you blow your 25-something top, yes, they too were indepth.

As for Greensburg stories-- pay attention. Yes, the subject of last night's Strader package was interesting. Too bad she isn't. And again, both KAKE and KWCH are doing stories from Greensburg about once a week.

Maybe I assumed to much in the beginning. Perhaps you haven't been hired to reply to this blog. So that means when the summer is over, your internship will be as well.

Hal,

I'd like to see you do a blog on why you think KWCH is #1. Same for other viewers. I think there are 2 main reasons for KWCH's dominance. 1. Roger, Cindy, Merril and Bruce.. While other stations main talent has changed, KWCH's have not, and loyal viewers love watching the same faces. They are all very good at what they do.

2. If you look at their signal coverage of the DMA, KWCH's signals covers the counties its supposed to best. You can get an over the air signal from KBS or KWCH better then most KAKE or KSN across the state.

I believe KAKE is #2 mostly because it has become more aggressive and has a more modern look. Its seen as the trendy station, but has troubles launching into #1 territory because of KWCH's established talent.

KSN is generally #3 because they are never too consistent. We constantly see the philosophy and main talent at KSN changing and its hard to create a loyal viewer when you are changing philosophies every year or so. With that said, I think KSN is slowly getting better again and just need to do something about that awful 5pm newscast, they are starting to change it, but might as well totally revamp it.

I will promise there will be a blog this weekend on my feelings on why KWCH is #1. They are pretty close to John's feelings and rest pretty much on the shoulders of their main anchor talent. As for the comment from the first anonymous, Megan Strader is doing a decent job as a bureau reporter on Greensburg stories. She acutally is doing as good if not a better job at these stories than all but 3 (Wilhelm, Schwanke, Grawe) of KWCH's Wichita based reporting corps could do. Dont get me wrong, these aren't award winning pieces, but they get the job done with coverage from Greensburg.
Not to be forgotten, Nick Vin Zant is doing an OK job with the Greensburg stories. He is getting the stories told, nothing spectacular, but at the same time they do their purpose and there really isn't anything too bad in them.
Meanwhile as time has moved on, KSN is showing some vulnerability of not having a reporter stationed at a Western bureau (I think), as KWCH and KAKE do. Ironically I see KSN had Chanda Brown do a story Today from out there, not sure if that was related to the recent days' coverage from the other two stations. -Hal
