You know its Summer and vacation when the Bureau reporters get to come into the "big city" and try their stuff. I cannot remember if KWCH led with it, but if not it certainly was near the beginning of the show: the apparent murder/suicide. Note to KWCH, if you have your bureau reporter in Wichita doing one of your top stories, slowly introduce her to things. At 6PM they had Tracy Crokett live at the scene doing a story on an apparent murder suicide. She bumbled and stumbled real badly with her live appearance that looked more early morning or lower market than it should have. She needs to practice in the studio with a teleprompter or outside on tape before she heads back out to do a live story. At 10PM KWCH's Michael Schwanke had a decent story on wheat cutters getting anxious to get into wet fields here, because there is better wheat awaiting them out west. Sounds like a boring story, and probably many of you might find it so, but I found it interesting.
I must say I think I watched my first complete KSN 5PM show on Monday, except for the portions in the studio. Why? Because weatherman Leon Smitherman filled in for Paul Petite in the field. Leon carried the show well and I think the format works if they would just have someone more likable than Paul anchor that show on a daily basis. When the show went back to the studio with Paul, filling in for Anita, I quickly remembered why I usually don't watch the show. -Hal

Crockett's stories are fine and she holds her own. The fact of the matter is you do not like KWCH. Too bad by far and away most people in the state do. I guess they are all wrong and you are right.
And again who are you to judge anyone. You have yet to say what your experience is. Where have you worked? What is your degree in? Where do you work now? All questions that if you want to be taken seriously, you should put out there. Aren't you for full disclosure?
to the poster above- this is a free country and "hal" can blog and write whatever he wants, as long as it's not slander. Many markets across the country have blogs like this. If you can't roll with the punches, don't work in the business. Remember when he wrote about Andrew Kozak's "acting", or Jennifer Bocchieri's reporting, or Paul Pettites' hair? The purpose of this blog is to initiate conversation and debate about our local stations- what they are doing right, wrong, etc. As they said in the 80's, "don't have a cow!"
What I said what that if he wants to have credibility then he should tell us about him and not just bash other people.
To the probable KWCH employee and poster #1,
I am amazed at how everyone has different opinions on which stations I like or don't like more. Honestly I think KWCH has the best anchors. They also have a few solid reporters in Kim Wilhelm, Michel Schwanke and to some degree Jim Grawe. Their problem is at this point they have no depth. They really don't have any middle-of-the road quality reporters. After their top three their quality suffers.
As far as the first commentor (KWCH employee) demanding to know who I am and all, once again, I am an avid viewer of the local news. To be honest, anyone who works in local news right now should wish there were more people like me who feel lost if they miss a local newscast, because a lot of people are tuning out of local news. David had it right in his post, the purpose of the blog is to initiate conversation and debate. If that can happen without me great. I am just here to initiate some topics and hopefully get people to engage in a friendly conversation. -Hal
Hal you should do grades sometime with brief explanations on these aspects of the 3 stations:
Main anchors,Weather Department, Sports Department, Graphics, Set, Storytelling, reporters, camera work, breaking news coverage.
One note of interest I must tell you and everyone is that KWCH is most watched, and its signals are the strongest and it covers the state best. That can't hurt with its #1 position right?
I find it funny that everytime Hal gets a little critical with KWCH, the employees go crazy. If you can't take criticism or realize there are flaws in your product then you have a problem.
I work at a local station, and I understand that EACH station has it's own problems. No station is perfect.
Hal, I enjoy your blog and often agree with your points...even when you are talking about my station. Keep up the good work.
KWCH employee...don't be such a baby. If you don't like the blog...DON'T READ IT!
In one of your very early post you mentioned putting together an "all star" team consiting of the "best" from each station... are you still planning to do that at some time?
To the first comment-- wake up. If you can't take critisism, get out of the business. And if you think Crockett's stories are fine-- you have no business being in the business.
Several have mentioned with these comments that I should grade the newscasts and I will work on that as I move on by taking look at specific parts of the Wichita TV news. Hopefully by late Tonight I will have the final part of my look at the stations' websites posted and then I am not sure which part I will next evaluate. -Hal
Most of KSN's reports don't belong on TV and all are much worse than anything 12 puts on the air.
