The "Peril" of Sweeps

Things started to get a little hostile in the comments of the last post, so lets turn to a lighter topic like feet and the "Pedicure Peril." KAKE had been promoting this sweeps piece about people getting infections from Pedicures. Nothing like seeing "boils" on legs and hearing a teen's tragedy of how she's now not able to be on her swim team because of the boils. The agony, plus she started getting teary from it. I am sure all those women tearing up from the Bachelor season finale shed a Kleenex worth over this story. I nearly did thinking what a waste of time, but on the other hand it was smart to play off of the audience from the Bachelor, so KAKE may not get the last cry, but rather the last laugh off of that one.
KWCH had been promoting heavily a story on a BTK profiler. Frankly I thought it turned out as a weak link to get play off of any remaining interest for the BTK subject. It came out better then the "Pedicure Peril" (thats not saying much). The profiler did admit he had Radar pegged as a loner and that might be partially wrong.
Meanwhile over at KSN, they were doing a piece on Argonia. Hmmmm. They must have their Sweeps hopes pinned on the town of 500 all having ratings booklets. I think I flipped by a story at 6PM on the same town. How many stories can you do on a town of 500? We know a couple, but after seeing one, will people, besides those living in town, want more of Argonia? I would think not, but who knows. The past few days I have been wondering if a station would alter their Sweeps plans and have a piece related to the Greensburg tornado. One reader reminded me KAKE had meteorologist Jay Prater take a look at the damage for a story. I wasn't a fan of that one. Anyway I had said if done right, the piece could be one of the better ones of the month. Another reader alerted me that Sweeps ends this week. So at 10PM I saw my first promo for such a Sweeps story. And it came from none other than KSN. That kind of surprised me, because they actually spent the money to fly a crew to Wisconsin to do a piece on a town, which like Greensburg sustained a lot of damage from a tornado a number of years ago and has since rebuilt. Not a bad idea, I didn't catch who is doing the story for them, but it will be interesting to see how they do. One thing, though, at least they promoted it, since it wasn't a health story or one of their small town Argonia like pieces. -Hal

Do you know that KSN actually flew them out there? And I am assuming the piece is on the F5 that destroyed the town of Oakfield in 1996.

They could have very easily taken elements from a story done by an NBC station in the area (Milwaukee is closest but Green Bay is also not too far) added their own pieces which is a possibility.

By the by, I think KWCH is turning out the best post-Greensburg stories. The ones about the FEMA trailers and how they may not be safe, the piece Sunday night about the soldier coming home from the ME and raising money for Greensburg. They also did one I think on where all the money donated is going and how to make sure it's getting to where it needs to.

Good point, I guess I dont know for sure if they flew out their own crew. I didn't pay alot of attention to the promo, because I had flipped and wasn't focusing on the TV at the time and then suddenly I realized it was a tornado promo and it was almost over.
I will agree that as far as daily turn stories, KWCH has done a real good job. I am surprised more wasn't made of the FEMA trailers not being safe after the sicknesses reported from the victims of Katrina. As I had said in an earlier post I thought it was well done and definitely is something that needs to be followed in the next few months. - Hal

I believe they did several stories on it but it's way to early to tell if anything will happen but I am glad they raised the issue.

KSN actually sent a crew to Wisconsin .

They did send a crew to Wisconsin...and the town is not Oakfield.

Give KSN some credit. They may be the smallest staff in the market, but I think they are doing some excellent work.

By the way, didn't KAKE warn us about how a Pedicure would kill us last year? LAME!

Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. You don't win viewers by doing one story about how pedicures can kill you. I'll bet you could find one person (maybe even two or three) that have ill-effects from a variety of services out there. That's called life. you don't need "KAKE on your ASS" to prove that.

You win viewers over time. Sure, Argonia only has 500 people. But if you notice, KSN has done a lot of small towns during the past 18 months. Add them up. All of a sudden there are a lot of people.

As for KWCH doing the best post-Greenwich stories. Really? I'd say KSN and KWCH have done about the same thing. Maybe different stories on different days; but there are hundreds of stories to do. No one station will do all of them at the same time. For better or worse you'll be seing good stories from Greensburg for years to come. Maybe even KAKE will be able to do one or two good ones.

I just know the ratings are what these stations go by

Mornings are KAKE #1, and KSN and KWCH really close behind

Noon is KWCH ahead of KSN, KAKE is at 11:30am

5pm is KWCH #1, KAKE #2, KSN #3

6pm is KWCH #1, KSN #2, KAKE #3

10pm is KWCH #1, KAKE #2, KSN #3

These have been like this pretty much for 2 years or so now

Actually KWCH has won every book since the mid-80's.

This will be no different, 12 on top, 3 on the bottom and 10 closer to 3 than to 12.

As for the your Hometown pieces, who cares? It's a biography about a town. It's basically a tourism spot. No news value whatsoever.

KAKE is #1 at 4!

It's amazing how they can be #1 and 11:30 and 4. Oh yeah, no one else is on.

KSN is #1 in the AM...#3 at 5 and #2 and 6 and 10.

Get the numbers from an advertsing firm and not your station. We're talking the entire market and not the Metro.

If you think KSN is #2 or even a contender for #2 at any time except right before the Today Show you are smoking something.

The numbers we are talking about come from Neilsen...not an advertising firm. Jeez, did you just get out of college? Maybe you should go back.

KSN is a distant 3rd. You triple their numbers and you get KWCH's. You double it and you get KAKE's.

No, I didn't just get out of college.

I am just saying stop believing what your station tells you. Advertising firms get the book too. Look at the true book, and don't always believe what you are told.

KAKE is #3 in the DMA at 6 and 10 period! That's according to the February Book.

As for KWCH...they may have one every book since the mid 1980's, and at this point have a great hold on the market...but their numbers are slipping.

KAKE'ers....stop worshiping yourself...BTK is over, and you now have to compete.

Settle for number 3...that's where you stand.

Actually everyone's numbers are down a bit but 12's are down much less than KSN or KAKE.

Advertisers have a stake in everything they tell you or try to sell you. So if you believe them then you are just as gullible.

Try reading the actual Nielsens, they don't have a dog in the fight.
