Sweeps Woody Back in Full Efect

It appears Sweeps stories were running on Wednesday. I really, though, couldn't tell at least by the topics. Although, KAKE definitely had all the bells and whistles to make me think they did the "a what's learned from a tornado" story for Sweeps. If this was the idea, nice change in Sweeps plan, but bad execution. For all the scary music and crazy editing, they might as well have blown the tornado siren through the whole thing. The idea wasn't bad: have station meteorologist Jay Prater explore the damage and talk to survivors as to where they road out the storm. Particularly, not surprising, was the self promoting in the middle of the piece. Prater talks about how one couple heard the weather warnings on TV, so of course they showed clips of Prater warning people with crazy effects. Fellas, at least disguise the effect that you use to promote your weather boy in the piece. Show your boy, but dont go over the top.
Stories on the early casts from all the stations celebrated the fact the first family was awarded a FEMA temporarily trailer to live in. Well that feel-good bubble was quickly burst by 10PM with KWCH's story on FEMA trailers and whether people get sick from a wood finish on the woodwork. A small number of folks have gotten sick down south who are using similar trailers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Not a bad story if it is a totally legit deal. Over at KSN, they saved probably the best for last. Their piece on religion and disasters, was probably one of the better side bar stories about the tornado, yet. -Hal

Is there a reason you always seem to praise KSN? Do you work for them or just like pulling for the way-way underdog?

HA! Funny One. Your comment did get me to thinking, so I did go back and read the old postings. I might have been a pulling for the "way-way underdog" lately. Thanks for keeping me honest. If you were to ask me several weeks ago, which station would I praise more than the others, and I probably would have said KWCH. But especially since the tornado hit, I have been been a little more positive toward KSN. One thing I am beginning to notice, since starting this little blog, that it is sort of cyclical. For a few days one station does flawless stuff and then a few days later another one does good work. Once you think a station has turned the tide, then out of nowhere they may take a few steps back. I have no doubt that will continue. However I highly doubt someone will ever accuse me of working for KAKE. -Hal

I think the people at 12 know they are number 1 and show that on air. Nothing against Roger or Cindy, but the reporters seem a little cocky.
I think KSN really has shined since the tornado. I mean look at the telethon they put together, simply amazing in that short amount of time given the smaller staffing. Their weather team is top notch as well. Freeman may seem corny, over the top a bit and a little phony, but boy did he and his team pull one out during that weekend. The other channels couldn't compare.
I think KAKE could be greater if they just quit over producing with the scary music- something you have pointed out time and time again.

Sounds like the person that posted that reply that is from KAKE. KAKE is a tabloid station that has just gone to crap since the Glen Horn got canned.

It looks like the last poster works for KSN and there's nothing wrong with that.

However, I have to strongly disagree about their storm coverage though. KSN and KAKE were still cutting in only on commercials both in Wichita and western Kansas until after the storm hit.

And why was Anita standing in front of the chroma-key that night with a stick mic instead of on the desk tossing back to Dave?

The telethon was solid but anyone could have but on that program.

Put on that program is what it should have said. Oops.

I think a reason that Anita was in the weather lab that night was because of the internet broadcast. It was streaming live from the weather lab only.

Anoymous are you westsider on Tvspy message boards? I told you there and I'll tell you again, KSN and KAKE were continuous in Western Kansas long before that tornado was even in Kiowa County, let alone approaching Greensburg. They weren't on in Wichita because its their policy not to interrupt Wichita viewers for storms out west. But they eventually went on for the Wichita signals when they realized how large the storm would be. Feel free to criticize how they were only on in Western Kansas and how KWCH was on statewide, but do not spread misinformation, it makes you look stupid.

Your other posts on tvspy also show you have a clear bias towards KWCH, you claim KSN is the #4 station in the market, since when does Fox Kansas compete against anyone? And they aren't a seperate news organization.

I have close ties with KAKE, Glen was fired by Gray communications, and not the GM at KAKE, had the GM not fired Glen, Gray most likely would have told the GM, (Terry Cole) to take a hike as well.

It's not true that KAKE and KSN were cutting in only during commercials in Wichita and the West. I do work at KSN, and know for a fact KSN was on continuous from 9:15ish on for the people of Greensburg via one of our western stations. Yes, KSN only used commercials in Wichita until the 10pm news. That way, people in no danger could enjoy their programs while people in harms way could have continuous warning. I think KAKE was doing the same thing.

Perhaps anyone COULD have put on the program (telethon)-- but only one station did. Isn't that the point. And, I'm not so sure any station could have done it. KWCH struggled with a simple phone bank in the afternoon with only cut-ins. Not sure they could have pulled-off a primet-time special.
